In 2017, a chance contest entry led Kyle Cameron to a mission that has honored her late son Dusty and has raised thousands of dollars for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital to assist others like him.
Cameron became involved with the Wrestling for a Cure event after winning a contest for four free tickets to the 2017 show, which happened to be on July 22, which would have been Dusty's 26th birthday if Burkitt's lymphoma hadn't taken his life on June 30, 2003.
When the event's organizers heard Cameron's story, they were moved to have the main event of Wrestling for a Cure honor her late son. Since then, the Dusty Cameron Memorial Battle Royale has been one of the highlights of the event, with Cameron awarding the trophy to the last two winners, Steven Bishop in 2017 and Truk Thompson in 2018.
Cameron has also worked to help raise money for the event, offering businesses a sponsorship opportunity for the 2019 show which will take place on Saturday, July 6, at 801 East Sangamon Avenue in Springfield.
The first 20 businesses to contact Cameron at 217-710-3376 or by Facebook and pledge a $100 donation will be publicly thanked and publicized on Facebook three times this summer and will have their business name displayed at Wrestling for a Cure.
Other sponsorship opportunities and donations are also available to businesses and individuals. For more information on those, contact the organizers of the event at www.facebook.com/wrestlingforacure17.
Cameron will also be raising money for St. Jude on Wednesday, June 19, during "Dusty's Day" at Gianni's Pizza and Italian Ristorante in Hillsboro.
From 4 to 9 p.m., a portion of sales will go to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital in honor of Dusty. The fundraiser is available for both delivery and carryout orders.
