Genevieve Kay Adams, 96, of Springfield, formerly of Hillsboro, died on Sunday, Feb. 4, 2024, at 4:15 a.m. at Cedarhurst Assisted Living in Springfield.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 6, from 1 to 2 p.m., at Bass Patton Dean Funeral Home in Hillsboro,  with funeral service to follow at 2 p.m.  The Rev. Michael Lawton, pastor of United Methodist Church in Hillsboro, will officiate.  Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Hillsboro.

Mrs. Adams was born on Feb. 22, 1927, in Carterville, to the late James and Verda (Alexander) Howerton.  She married Joseph J. Adams, on Dec. 27, 1947, in Carterville, and he preceded in death in 1987. 

Mrs. Adams was a graduate of Carterville High School in Carterville and SIU Carbondale, where she received her BS in physics.  She was a retired teacher and had taught at Loda High School in Loda, and Hillsboro Jr. High School in Hillsboro.  She was a past member of the Presbyterian Church in Hillsboro, where she was a choir member and pianist. Scrapbooking was her specialty and she also enjoyed gardening and sewing. Mrs. Adams had lived in Carterville,  Crowne Point, IN, Kankakee, Hillsboro and Springfield during her lifetime.

Mrs. Adams is survived by three children, Joseph H. (Cindy) Adams of Sun Lakes, AZ, Gillian Terracina of Canyon Lake, TX and Robin (Mark) Enstrom of Chatham; eight grandchildren, Kate Miller, Jenny Van Valer, Brooke Giannelli, Joseph S. Adams, Amanda Woods, Ellen Zamstein, Kyle Enstrom and Derek Enstrom; and fifteen great-grandchildren. 

Along with her parents and husband, Mrs. Adams was preceded in death by a daughter, Bobbie Lynn Floyd in 1995, a son-in-law, Charles Terracina, and siblings, Paul Gene Howerton and Betty Faulkner.
