Gerald D. Kuehnen, 99, of Hillsboro, died on Friday morning, June 15, 2018, at Sherman Villa East in Sherman.

Private funeral services will be held at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield with Bruce Holcomb officiating.

Mr. Kuehnen was born on Jan. 23, 1919, in Staunton, to Charles and Lydia (Weissen) Kuehnen. He married Betty Jean Nelson on Oct.  7, 1954, at the First Presbyterian Church in Hillsboro, and she preceded him in death on April 19, 2010.

He graduated from high school before joining the U.S. Navy. He became a Boatswain's Mate G, Petty Officer 1st Class, and after his Navy career worked as a U.S. Postal Carrier. He lived in Hillsboro, as well as Philadelphia, PA, and Norfolk, VA.

Mr. Kuehnen was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association, a member of the National Association of Destroyer Veterans and a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers.

He is survived by brothers-in-law, Guy Nelson of Springfield and Bruce Holcomb of Hillsboro;  a niece, Lori Beth Holcomb; and nephews, Greg Holcomb, Jeff Holcomb, Doug Holcomb and Matt Holcomb; as well as several great-nieces and great-nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents.
