Gillespie Slugs Way To Win Over Panthers

The Gillespie Miners chipped away at Litchfield over six innings to score a 13-2 short-game victory over the Lady Panthers in South Central Conference play on Tuesday, April 23, in Litchfield.

The Miners made the most of six Litchfield errors, scoring seven unearned runs on the Panther miscues. Gillespie also had 11 hits in the game as they scored two runs in the first, three runs in the second and four runs in both the fourth and fifth to come away with the 11-run win.

Litchfield's two runs would come in the fourth and sixth innings, with all three of their hits coming in the final frame.

The run in the fourth came after Mallory Beechler reached on a dropped third strike and eventually came around to score on a ground out by Carly Boden.

In the sixth, Kate Komor reached on a single, but was erased on the base paths soon after for the second out of the inning. Beechler, who also reached on an error in the first inning, singled and scored on a double by Lizzy Luttrell to make it 13-2.

Litchfield would try to extend the game to the seventh, but a ground ball back to Sydney Bires on the mound ended the game.

Bires would strike out six in her six innings of work for Gillespie, while Emily Senjan K'ed seven on the mound for Litchfield.

Now 3-14 on the year and 0-4 in the SCC, Litchfield will look to regroup on Friday, April 26, when they take on Southwestern at home.
