Thank you for publishing an article in your paper on March 7 by Grant Morgan about how our state is failing to provide funding or staff to help prevent suicides in Illinois.
I am grateful to know that at least one senator is doing something about our lack of action. Chicago Senator Heather Steans is sponsoring legislation which all of our senators should support: creating a new office of suicide prevention within the state Department of Public Health. Please send a thank you to her at her website, www.senatorsteans.com, thanking her for what she is doing even though we do not live in her district.
Cross Over Ministries applauds The Journal-News’ efforts to let all of us know that talking about suicide prevention, substance use disorder and mental health challenges is not enough. We all need to be actively participating to help Montgomery County, which lost 18 people in 2018 to suicide and substance use disorder, discover and implement real and lasting programs for wellness and recovery–even if we start one person at a time.
