Finally the weather was good for a baseball game, so Hillsboro ventured to Greenville Monday afternoon, May 6, to play the Greenville Comets. Sadly for Hillsboro it rained figuratively in Greenville too, only it was Comet hits and runs that poured down on the Toppers - 11 hits, 13 runs, all in four innings of offense as the hosts dominated 13-0.
The most damage came in the bottom of the third when Topper starter Landon Carroll and reliever Hayden Grosenheider were touched for nine runs as 13 Comets batted. There were two outs, one run in, when Chad Stearns and Wil Harnetiaux were hit by pitches consecutively. A walk for an RBI and five hits followed before the third out was recorded. It was one of the more deflating innings the Toppers have experienced this season.
The Comets had more hits (seven) in the third than Hillsboro had for the game (four). In fact, the Comets had more doubles (five) than Hillsboro had hits. Andrew Frey, the Comets' leadoff hitter, was four-for-four, with two runs scored, two doubles and four RBIs. Logan Doll, the clean-up hitter, was three-for-three with two runs scored, two doubles, and three RBIs.
Hurler Brock Nelson was in control of the Topper offense; Griffin King reached on an error (the only one in the game) in the first and singled in the third; Drew Willman singled in the second and fourth, Jace Tuetken singled in the second, and Tanner Mullen drew a walk in the fourth, but that was it as far as Hillsboro base runners were concerned. No one reached third. Nelson only struck out four, but he also only threw 71 pitches in his five inning complete game performance. All runs were scored with two outs.
The Toppers played Litchfield there in non-conference action Tuesday, May 7, and finish the conference season Wednesday here against Piasa Southwestern.
