Hare Scrambles For The Holidays

Posted

With 128 entries and 192 riders on Sunday, Nov. 8, the Cahokia Creek Dirt Riders Charity Hare Scramble didn’t just mean a lot of racers had a good time, it meant a lot of kids were going to have a good Christmas as well.

With a $10 toy included in the entry fee, the group will be able to make sure that dozens of youngsters won’t go wanting this holiday season. Add in donations to local food pantries that were collected at the gate as well and the race in White City was a win before the first bikes took off.

Once the racing itself got started, some of the racers from the Journal-News coverage area made sure that the victorious nature continued.

In the 50cc class, Jhenner Walker of Morrisonville beat out 20 other racers to take the top spot and was also the overall top finisher in the group, which included the 65cc beginner class as well.

Huntley Durbin of Hillsboro also ran in the 50cc class, placing eighth overall, while two of Jhenner’s siblings, twins Jhorjie and Jhordyn Walker, placed seventh and 11th respectively.

In the 65cc beginner class, Panama’s Case Cruthis finished second and took fourth overall in the group, while Dax Toberman was tenth overall and fifth in the 65cc class.

Travis Lentz of Walshville would roll to a win in the more experienced 65cc class, completing eight laps in 82 minutes and 28 seconds to pick up the win.

In the Ironman, Litchfield’s Chris Short was one of two racers to complete 14 laps, doing so in three hours and 12 minutes, two minutes quicker than Josh Lane to take first. Chase Saathoff of Hillsboro would place fourth overall, going 12 laps in just over three hours.

The event also featured several team races, where racers were competing in two-person teams and alternate laps. Several local racers competed in one of the five different classes on Sunday, two of whom picked up wins.

Anthony Krivi would win the A race with teammate Rylan Frankford, completing 15 laps in two hours, 59 minutes and 40 seconds, the only team to get 15 laps in under the three-hour mark.

Lake Plowman and Jordan Emmons were second in the A race, while Morrisonville’s Jhadyn Walker was third with teammate Skyler Harless.

All told, six teams would complete 15 laps in the A race, with Jeremy Walker, father of the Walker racing clan, the first to finish 14 as he and teammate Lance Minnaert took seventh.

Hillsboro grad Derek Toberman and Litchfield’s Brad Saxby would team up to place tenth, while Litchfield’s Kaleb Cloyd and teammate Drake Lineback were 12th in the A race.

In the B race, Jhak Walker, another of the Walker family of Morrisonville, teamed with Gavin Minnaert to win with a time of three hours and 50 seconds for 14 laps, beating out the team of Collin Johnson and Camden Thomas by a little less than seven minutes. Raymond’s Brayden Pickerill finished sixth overall, completing 13 laps with Broc Marfell in three hours, ten minutes and 50 seconds.

In the C race, Brad Moody and Jake Kerner claimed the win with 13 laps completed in three hours, eight minutes and seven seconds, with Ryan Komor of Litchfield the closest Journal-News area racer in ninth with teammate Ben Ferrill.

Others in the C race included Jon Durbin and Kyle Raymer in 13th and Dave Suslee and Donavan Pope in 19th.

In the Father/Son race, Steve and Ethan Chestnut of Sorento finished second to Brandon and John Griffiths.  The Griffiths completed 14 laps in three hours, seven minutes and 53 seconds, while the Chestnuts completed 13 laps in three hours, two minutes and 15 seconds.

There were no Journal-News racers (that we know of) in the 50+ race, but Gregory Hunt and David Brewster won the event with a time of 3:01:38, completing 13 laps.

While the race was most likely the final one of the year at White City, some of the local racers will be continuing to race in the upcoming weeks.

Jhadyn, Jhak and Jeremy Walker have the NEPG series race in Texas on Nov. 15, followed by a 100-miler on Thanksgiving weekend. Several racers are also planning to compete in the Belleville Enduro Team Hare Scramble on Nov. 15, or the WFO Productions Hare Scramble in Keithsburg, which is an AMA District 17 points race.
