For five generations, Heinz Furniture and Flooring in Carlinville has been serving Macoupin and Montgomery counties and the surrounding area, but now that service includes the work of a professional designer.
“Katie and I have worked together at R.P. Lumber for four years,” owner Greg Whitler said of the store’s new professional designer, Katie Jackson. “The opportunity to work together again came up and we ran with it. We are making Heinz Furniture a one-stop shop for our customers.”
Now that Jackson is a part of the Heinz business, she is bringing her knowledge of design to complete the transformation of their customers’ homes.
“We are building a Heinz home concept, where we can update and design our customers’ kitchens and baths, and set them up with other building materials as well,” Whitler said.
Jackson’s main focus is to help customers pick out cabinets, backsplash, countertops and flooring.
“We offer Cambria Countertops and several cabinet brands; Way Point Cabinetry, Monarch Cabinets and Custom Wood Products Cabinetry,” Jackson said. “In our bath department, we offer the Onyx Collection for showers, vanity tops and glass doors.”
Heinz will be adding a 22x32-foot addition to feature a brand new sleep center and changing around the footprint. However, for now, they will focus on cabinets and other design features.
“Katie uses the 2020 design program, which is an industry standard. This gives customers a 3-D concept of what their kitchen or bath will look like when it is completed. They will be able to see it on a 55-inch HD television,” Whitler said.
Heinz is also looking to expand their coverage area. “We will service customers anywhere from Springfield to St. Louis,” Whitler said.“We want our business to have even more, so we’re offering these various new products and a plan to grow the store as much as possible,” Whitler said.
Heinz Furniture was started in 1854 by Peter Heinz, and still operates in the original building.
“Peter Heinz sold cabinets back in the 1800s so it seems fitting to go back to their roots on the new venture,” Whitler said. “Peter came over to the United States from Germany to start a new life in America,” Whitler said.
Whitler and his wife, Danlee–Peter’s great-great-granddaughter–both graduated from Carlinville High School and have remained loyal to their community.
“This is a history, a big motivation of ours. A story about a dream, a family, a community, hard work and a Carlinville tradition established in 1854, that is still going strong thanks to our great customers,” Whitler said.
Whitler has 20 years in the building trades industry. “I worked as a contractor with outside sales my entire career before taking over Heinz and I traveled within a 50-mile radius, working with people and building relationships with them. I want to keep that going,” he said.
Flooring has been Heinz’s biggest seller for the last few years.
“We offer free on-site estimates for flooring. We also can remove and dispose of old flooring and move the furniture if needed,” Whitler said. “Our line of flooring includes Shaw, Dream Weaver, Congoleum and many other top brand names.”
Whitler is committed to being very accessible to his customers, as well as being very hands-on. “We offer financing and a free delivery program. We are very customer-oriented,” he said.
Heinz has also been a Bemco Mattress dealer for 50 years, which are all produced right in Springfield. They are also the local dealer for all types of Graber Blinds for windows with measuring and installation available.
He went on to say that in their furniture department, they offer many brands, such as Flex Steel, Ashley and Best Home Furnishings out of Indiana. “We are excited about our future and taking advantage of opportunities that come up while focusing on diversifying what we offer by adding more and more building materials for our customers.” Whitler said.
