It’s early in the season, but Sorento racer Eldon Hemken has been pretty productive over the last few weeks.
Racing in the UMP Sport Compact class, Hemken picked up the checkered flag at Tri-City Speedway in Granite City on Friday, June 26. After finishing fourth in the second of two heats, Hemken started eighth overall and made his way through the field to finish in the top spot in the four-cylinder class.
The win was Hemken’s second in six races this season as he has finished no worse than ninth in 2020. In February, he qualified sixth in the Hornet class with a lap of 16.666 seconds at the Tuckasee Toilet Bowl at Clarksville Speedway in Clarksville, TN, then finished fourth overall in the A Feature.
In his spring debut, Hemken was ninth in the UMP Sport Compact class at Federated Auto Parts I-55 Raceway in Pevely, MO, after finishing fourth in his preliminary heat.
In June, he was back in Illinois for his first two wins of the season. On June 12, Hemken raced in the Hornet dvision at Fayette County Speedway in Brownstown and swept the night with a first place finish in his heat and a win in the feature. The next night, racing Hornets at Charleston Speedway in Charleston, Hemken was third in his heat and first overall in the feature once again.
He would nearly go back-to-back-to-back in his next race, on June 19, taking second at Lincoln Speedway in Lincoln in the Hornet class, after winning his preliminary heat.
Hemken returned to Federated Auto Parts I-55 Raceway on June 20 and jumped up three spots in the finishing order for a sixth place finish.
His success on the track has put him atop the standings in the UMP Sport Compact points race with 334 points, 30 more than second place Dave Lauritson. Last year, Hemken finished in the top ten in the national points, placing ninth with 1,270 points, and first in the UMP West Region, with 1,161 points.
