Hillsboro Crew Installs Bricks On Berry
Brick pavers are being reinstalled on Berry Street in downtown Hillsboro. The street which was originally bricked over a hundred years ago, has gradually had blacktop patches added to it when plumbing or sewer issues arose. Workers are taking out the blacktop areas and replacing the asphalt with brick. The bricks became available when workers were tearing out the old lumberyard on School Street for the Hixson Lumber expansion. Those bricks, which made a roadway into the covered shed areas of the lumberyard, were just being dug up and dumped to be used as fill. At the city's request, the loads of brick and dirt were taken to the street department shed, where they are being cleaned and prepared for reuse. The project on Berry Street should be finished by May and the city of Hillsboro now has a large supply of pavers for use on other remaining brick streets.
