With the starting line in the shadow of the historic Montgomery County Courthouse, the Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce will celebrate America's 243rd birthday with the 30th annual 4th of July Biathlon and Five Mile Run.
Competitors can choose between a five-mile run or the biathlon, which is the run, followed by a 15-mile bike ride. For the biathlon, participants can compete individually or as a two-person team (males, females, or mixed team). Prizes will be awarded for the top three male/female for the five-mile run, as well as the top finishers (male and female) in age groups 19 and under; 20-29; 30-39; 40-49; 50-59 and 60-and-over.
For the biathlon, prizes will be awarded to the top three females, the top three males and to the top two in each of the above age groups. Additionally, the Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce will award prizes to the top two male groups, female groups, and mixed team groups.
The race will begin at 7:45 a.m. on July 4, with the start and finish of the five-mile run taking place on the north side of the Historic Montgomery County Courthouse.
The race will start and head north on the North Road for 2.5 miles, before turning around and finishing back at the start line. While this is the end of the line for those who opt just for the run, those who are competing in the biathlon will then jump on their bikes and hit the North Road once again for 7.5 miles one way, then 7.5 miles back.
Participants can sign up at Fusion Fitness and Aquatics, Hillsboro City Hall, or online at https://register.chronotrack.com/r/49676. Those who sign up before June 18 will receive a short-sleeved performance shirt. Participants can sign up the day of the event starting at 6:30 a.m.
The cost to enter, before June 18, is $35 for the individual biathlon, $55 for the team biathlon or $25 for just the run. Prices increase to $55 for the individual biathlon, $65 for the team biathlon and $35 for just the run after June 18.
Race packets may be picked up at Fusion Fitness and Aquatics on July 3, or starting at 6:30 a.m. on July 4.
Free Kids Mini Biathlon
In addition to the full sized race, the Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce is adding a kids mini biathlon to this year's event.
The kids' race includes a .3 mile run, followed by a .3 mile bike ride that will begin on the east side of the Historic Montgomery County Courthouse at 9:30 a.m. Participants will then head south on Main Street to Sullivan Drugs, before turning around and returning to the finish line.
The race is for children between the ages of five to ten, with prizes awarded to the top three in the five to seven age group and the top three in the eight to ten age group. The race is free to participate in and kids can sign up at the event.
