The Hillsboro girls cross country team took second place in a four-team meet at Schneider Park in Brighton on Tuesday, Sept. 10.
The Lady Hiltoppers would be led by Sierra Compton, who finished second at the meet, which was shortened to two laps instead of three (2.1 miles) due to excessive heat.
Compton would stop the clocks at 14:49, 33 seconds ahead of third place finisher Mackenzie Fisher of Staunton. The only runner ahead of Compton was Staunton's Lydia Roller (12:35), who is the odds on favorite for the Class 1A state title after finishing second last year.
Riley Hemken would join Compton in the top ten with a 16:17 and a seventh place finish, while Madelyn Rupert was tenth with a time of 16:44. Vanessa Compton, Claire Tester and Megan White would cross the line in succession, finishing 13th through 16th with times of 17:20, 17:36 and 17:52, while Shelby Houchlei was 19th with a 19:24. Avery Smith and Jade Christian also ran for the Toppers, posting times of 19:43 and 19:44 to finish the race in 22nd and 23rd.
In the team ranks, Hillsboro would pick up 45 points, 21 away from Staunton for first and eight ahead of Southwestern for third. North Mac would also compete in the race, but did not have enough runners for a team score.
Hillsboro will see Roller and company again on Tuesday, Oct. 1, when they run against the Lady Bulldogs and Litchfield at Litchfield's lone home meet of the season at Lake Lou Yaeger.
