Hillsboro Girls Get First Win At Taylorville Tourney

Posted

After a tough start to the 2019 Lady Tornadoes Thanksgiving Holiday Tournament in Taylorville, the Hillsboro girls basketball team picked up their first win of the season with a 62-20 decision over Jacksonville on Saturday, Nov. 23.

The Toppers held Jacksonville to single digits in each of the four quarters, while scoring in double digits themselves in three of the four frames.

Hillsboro led 22-4 after the first quarter and 43-10 going into the locker room at halftime. A 12-6 third quarter and a 7-4 fourth quarter would cement the Lady Toppers' first win of 2019.

Nikya Harston would pick up a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds as she went 10-of-12 from the field. Claire Tester complimented her post partner with 12 points and four rebounds, while Maci Blankenship had two points and six boards.

Further away from the hoop, Layne Rupert and Shelby Houchlei added nine and seven respectively, while Emily Reynolds and Emma Miller finished with four apiece. Haley Major rounded out the scoring for Hillsboro with two points as the Toppers shot 46.8 percent from the field.

Saturday's shooting success was a welcome sight after facing tough defensive squads in their first two games at Taylorville, who held Hillsboro to 37 percent from the field in both games.

In Friday's opener, the Toppers were outscored in three of the four quarters and would fall to Mt. Zion 54 to 37. The Braves led 13-5 after one, 31-14 after two and 48-23 after three quarters of play, before Hillsboro rallied to shave eight points off the lead in the fourth.

Both Claire Tester and Nikya Harston would have 11 points in the loss, with Harston also grabbing 11 rebounds for a double-double. Haley Major and Emily Reynolds chipped in five and four, while Vanessa Compton added three. Layne Rupert and Shelby Houchlei rounded out the scoring with two and one respectively.

Their second game would be against a talented Rochester squad coached by Hillsboro grad J.R. Boudouris. The Toppers would hang close early on, but an 11-0 first half run by the Rockets put them out in front for good in the 47-34 victory over Hillsboro.

With 2:41 to play in the first quarter, Hillsboro held an 8-6 lead over the Rockets, but Rochester would outscore the Toppers 7-0 to end the quarter, then scored the first four points of the second to build a 17-8 lead.

Claire Tester would break the drought with a putback on an offensive rebound, then scored three more points over the next two minutes to cut the lead to 17-13 with 3:38 to play in the first half.

That would be as close as Hillsboro would get though, as the Rocket sled 22-16 at the break, 37-27 after three quarters and 47-34 at the final horn.

Claire Tester would finish with 14 points, followed by Emily Reynolds with seven and Shelby Houchlei with five. Maci Blankenship, Nikya Harston, Layne Rupert and Haley Major all had two points apiece as well.

Hillsboro's final two games of the tournament will be on Nov. 29, at 5 p.m. against Civic Memorial and on Nov. 30, at 6:30 p.m. against Taylorville.
