The Hillsboro softball team had some timely hitting in the early going to beat a scrappy Lincolnwood squad on Thursday, April 11, by a 13-6 final score in Raymond.
The Toppers staked starting pitcher Kai Hanner to a 6-1 lead after two innings, with all six Hillsboro runs coming with two outs.
Hillsboro made the most of a pair of Lincolnwood errors in the first inning as Haley Major, Sheridan Lyerla and Chloe Beck all scored in the opening frame.
The Lancers would get one of those runs back as Sidney Glick singled and later scored on a passed ball, but Hillsboro would get three more runs in the top of the second.
After Lincolnwood starter Sydney Herman got the first two batters out, Haley Major started the rally with a single and two stolen bases. Katie Schaake would walk and Kai Hanner would double to score both runners. Hanner would steal third and came home on an error to make it 6-1.
After a scoreless third, Hillsboro found the plate three more times, with Hanner, Sheridan Lyerla and Chloe Beck all reaching base to start the inning. Riley Hemken would drive in Hanner with a sacrifice fly and Lyerla would score on a base hit by Zoe Honchell. Faith Holtz would add an RBI ground out that scored Beck and made it 9-1 as the Toppers seemed destined to short-game the Lancers.
The home team had other ideas though as they came back in the fourth with three runs of their own. After the first out of the inning, Maggie McClelland reached on an error, followed by Marisa Webb picking up a single and Sydney Herman reaching on another error.
McClelland would come around to score on a passed ball, while both Webb and Herman scored on an error after a dropped third strike to make it 9-4.
Both teams would score once in the fifth inning, with Hanner coming around on fielder's choice after intentionally being walked and Lincolnwood's Cassie Krager reaching on an error and working her way around the bases to score on a passed ball.
Hillsboro would put the game out of reach in the sixth inning with three more runs, as Katie Schaake picked up an RBI single and two runs scored when Sheridan Lyerla reached on an error.
With Hillsboro up 13-5 going into the final inning, Lincolnwood got one run when Sidney Glick singled, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a dropped third strike. That would be as close as the Lancers would get though, as Hillsboro closed out the win.
Both Lyerla and Major would have two hits apiece in the win, with Schaake, Hanner, Beck, Honchell and Jaylaan Milanos also adding hits for Hillsboro. Glick was 2-for-4 for the Lancers, who also got hits from Marisa Webb and Shelby Hattenbach.
The result would move Hillsboro to 11-1 on the season, while Lincolnwood fell to 3-7. The Lady Lancers, who saw their game against Bunker Hill washed out on Friday, will play Taylorville and Tri-City at home to start the week, while Hillsboro will host Vandalia on Monday, followed by road trips to Pana on Tuesday and Alton Marquette on Wednesday.
