The annual Hillsboro Table Tennis Open has been set for Saturday, May 4, beginning at 8:45 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hillsboro.
The 30th annual tournament is sponsored by The Journal-News and hosted by Hillsboro Table Tennis. It's open to ping pong players of all ages and skill levels, male and female. Entry fee is $20 and includes both singles and doubles play.
The tournament's unique round robin format allows a chance for players of all skill levels to play lots of matches. In singles, every player will compete in an opening three-person round robin, from which they will play themselves into Class A, Class B, or Class C.
Once in the classes, entrants will compete in large round robins against several players of similar ability. Cash prizes will be awarded to first and second place finishers in each class.
This year, doubles will be a weighted blind draw for partners, with cash prizes for first and second place finishers.
The venue opens at 8 a.m. and players must check in before 8:45 a.m. Singles play begins promptly at 9 a.m. and will continue until about 3 p.m. Doubles will run when singles has concluded until roughly 5 p.m.
Admission is free to spectators, and there is limited seating directly in front of the tables where the top players will compete. Those matches will run roughly from 11 a.m. to about 2 or 3 p.m.
Entry deadline is Thursday, May 2, and the tournament is limited to 36 participants. For more information, call tournament director Mike Plunkett at (217) 254-7920.
