It was a day for firsts as the Greenville Comets hosted their first ever cross country meet on Tuesday, Oct. 13. Taking advantage of some teams short on numbers, the Hillsboro girls cross country team won what is probably their first meet as a team since the school dropped the program in the early 2000s.
The Lady Hiltoppers finished the meet with 30 points to beat Greenville by 14 as the Comets were the only other squad with at least five runners. Litchfield would send three representatives, all of whom finished in the top ten, while Staunton and Carlinville ran four each. Pana had five runners, but two ran later in the boys race.
The Toppers were led by Sierra Compton, who picked up her second victory. Compton’s time of 22:59 would beat out Litchfield’s Myka Fenton by 74 seconds and Kylee Eiting by 76 seconds as the two Panthers finished second and third.
Sierra’s older sister, Vanessa Compton, would be just behind that group in fourth with a time of 24:33 to give Hillsboro a strong start to their winning score. Litchfield’s Karly Kruse would finish out the Panthers’ trio, taking tenth with a time of 27:14.
Avery Smith would run a time of 27:28 for Hillsboro’s next score as the sophomore runner finished 13th on the day. Meagan White would be close behind her with a 28:55, coming in 16th overall.
Aleicia Miller would round out the scoring for Hillsboro with a 21st place finish in a time of 31:36, while Jade Christian finished 24th in a time of 34:48.
Unofficially, the win marks the first time that a Hillsboro cross country team has won a meet since the program was dropped. Newspaper records show the last Hillsboro cross country team competing in 2002, but the last team with enough numbers to actually factor into a team result was most likely in 2000.
With a win now under their belts, the Hiltoppers will carry that momentum with them to Southwestern High School, where they will compete against the other South Central Conference schools in the 2020 conference tournament on Monday, Oct. 19, at 3:30 p.m. Hillsboro should have their hands full though as mighty Roxana looks to three-peat, along with talented Litchfield and Staunton teams at full strength.
