After a solid start to the season with a second place finish at the St. Anthony Invitational on Aug. 9, the Hillsboro boys golf team faced what should be one of their toughest tests of the season in the next match on Friday, Aug. 10.
The Toppers would take part in the Illinois Junior Golf Association Prep Tour High School Showcase, which pitted 16 of the best teams in the state against one another in a North vs. South duel.
Hillsboro would more than hold their own against the best of the best, trying for sixth place with a 305 at Senica's Oak Ridge Golf Club in LaSalle.
The Toppers would put two players in the top ten, which consisted entirely of players who shot par for 18 holes (72) or better.
Alex Eickhoff would take sixth, carding a 71 with rounds of 34 on the front and 37 on the back. Eickhoff had six birdies on the day, four of which came on the par-36 front nine.
White would be just behind Eickhoff with an even-par 72. The Hillsboro junior would shoot a 37 on the front nine and a 35 on the back nine, with two birdies and one bogey on the back half of the course.
Dane Huber and Wilson Hamby would also play well, carding matching 81s to round out the scoring for Coach Jeff Eickhoff's squad. Huber shot a 39 on the front and 42 on the back with two birdies, while Hamby had a 38 on the front nine and a 43 on the back with one birdie.
Tad Daniels and Owen Malloy would also play for Hillsboro, both breaking 90 for the day. Daniels shot a 44 and a 43 for his two nine hole scores, finishing with an 87, while Malloy had an 89, with rounds of 44 and 45.
Only one other Class 1A school would finish higher than the Toppers, Effingham St. Anthony, who shot a 302. The rest of the top five were all teams who finished in the top three in the Class 2A and Class 3A state tournaments last year, including state champions Hinsdale Central (3A) and Charleston (2A).
The Red Devils of Hinsdale Central would take the team title with a 291. Five of their top six would finish within six shots of par, with sixth man Charlie Hoiberg (son of Chicago Bulls Head Coach Fred Hoiberg) the exception with a 10-over-par 82.
Lincolnshire Stevenson, third in 3A last year, would be second with a 296, while Charleston was third with a 298. Normal-based University High would be fourth with a 300. The other Class 1A teams in the tournament were last year's state champions, Port Byron Riverdale, who tied for ninth with a 317, and Rockford Christian, who was seventh at state last year and shot a 335 to finish in 14th.
The Toppers will remain in tournament mode for the next two stops on their schedule as they play in the East Alton-Wood River Tournament at Belk Park on Aug. 13, and at the Gary Saunders Invite at Macomb Country Club on Aug. 18.
