The Hillsboro High School softball team remain perfect in the South Central Conference after an 8-3 win over Roxana on Friday, April 26, in Hillsboro.
The Shells, who entered the game 4-3 in the conference, would prove to be a tough test in the early going as they held the Toppers scoreless for the first two innings. That scoreless spell included Roxana throwing runners out at the plate in both the first and second.
Roxana would also get on the board first as Madison Klaas led off the third with a double, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a single by Olivia Stangler. Stangler would try to score from first on a double by Kiley Winfree, but a strong relay from Katie Schaake to Shelby Houchlei to Alexis Wolf at the plate would keep another run from scoring.
The Toppers would tie the game up in the third inning though, as Schaake picked up a two-out triple and scored on an error by the Roxana catcher.
After a quick inning by Kai Hanner on the mound in the fourth, Hillsboro would give their pitcher enough run support for the rest of the game as they plated four runs on three hits and two errors.
Chloe Beck would single to start the inning, then moved to third on a double by Alexis Wolf. Erin Moore would reach on an error and drive in Beck to give Hillsboro their first lead of the game. After a strikeout, Haley Major would reach on an error that allowed Alexis Wolf to score, and Moore would score shortly after on a throwing error by the Roxana catcher that made it 3-1. Major would score the final run of the fourth on an RBI single by Sheridan Lyerla three batters later.
More runs would come in the bottom of the fifth as back-to-back singles by Beck and Wolf would give Hillsboro two runners on. Roxana would try to keep the damage to a minimum after a strikeout and a fielder’s choice by Riley Hemken, but Major doubled to score both Wolf and Hemken, making it 7-1 in Hillsboro’s favor. Lyerla would tack on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth after she reached on an error.
While the Shells did pick up nine hits in the game, including three in the seventh that led to Roxana’s final two runs, Hanner did well to keep the Shells from crossing home plate often.
The future Billiken would have nine strikeouts and one walk in her seven innings of work, as she picked up win number 13 on the year.
Offensively, Beck would go 4-for-4 with a run scored, while Wolf was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Major and Schaake also had two hits and a run scored apiece, with Major also driving in three runs for the 21-3 Lady Hiltoppers.
Weather permitting, Hillsboro will host Gillespie on Monday, followed by a road date with Greenville on Tuesday. They will close out the conference season on Friday, May 3, against Southwestern, who is also 6-0 in the SCC thus far on the season.
