Hillsboro Tops Tornadoes In Finale

Posted

The Hillsboro girls basketball team ended their trip to Taylorville on a high note on Saturday, Nov. 30, with a 41-38 victory over the host school.

Both Hillsboro and Taylorville were 1-3 entering the game as they shared similar results in their earlier games, with wins over Jacksonville and losses to Civic Memorial, Rochester and Mt. Zion.

The Toppers would trail early, but came back strongly to end the first quarter as they led 10-7 after eight minutes. The second quarter would be the reverse as Hillsboro built on their lead, before Taylorville reeled them back in late in the quarter.

Hillsboro would finish strong though, as they outscored the Tornadoes 15-8 in the quarter to take a healthy 25-15 lead at the break.

The visitors would maintain that margin for much of the third quarter, but Taylorville would shave three points off the lead to make it 36-29 going into the final frame.

The hosts would make it close in the waning minutes, but Hillsboro would hold on for a 41-38 victory, their second of the tournament and the year.

Nikya Harston and Claire Tester would both reach double figures, with Harston putting in 13 and Tester adding ten. Harston would also have 17 rebounds, 12 of which came on the offensive boards.

Emily Reynolds would add in six points, followed by Haley Major with four, Maddy Rupert with three, Layne Rupert and Maci Blankenship with two and Shelby Houchlei with one.

The win came on the heels of a tough loss to Civic Memorial, who beat the Toppers 77-18.

The Eagles would outscore the Toppers 23-7, 25-3 and 26-4 in the first three quarters, before Hillsboro claimed a 4-3 advantage in the fourth.

Maci Blankenship led the team in scoring with five points, followed by Claire Tester (four), Nikya Harston (three), Emily Reynolds (two), Maddy Rupert (two), Haley Major (one) and Shelby Houchlei (one).

The Toppers were in good company in receiving a thrashing from the Eagles. In their other four games at Taylorville, Civic Memorial won by 82 points against Jacksonville (87-5), 36 points against Mt. Zion (71-35), 62 points against Taylorville (93-31) and 26 points against Rochester (61-35) in Saturday's defacto championship game. The Eagles' average margin of victory in their five wins at Taylorville, which gave them their third straight tournament title, was 53 points.

Kourtland Tyus and Anna Hall would represent the Eagles on the all-tournament team. Hillsboro would be the only other team to have two players on this year's list as both Nikya Harston and Claire Tester were honored for their play over the five games.

Now 2-3 on the season, Hillsboro will have a few days off before their next game on Thursday, Dec. 5, at home against Carlinville.
