Hillsboro Track Starts Season At Indoor Meets

The Hillsboro High School boys and girls track teams headed east to open up the 2019 season as they competed in indoor meets in Jacksonville on March 2 and Elsah on March 9.

Competing in the Class 2A/3A division, Hillsboro would finish 13th in the girls team standings and would compete on the boys' side as well, but did not pick up any points.

Senior Kyra Huber would pick up points in both the 55 meter dash and the 400 meter dash. Huber ran a 1:05.71 to finish fifth in the 400 meters and finished sixth in the 55 meter finals with a time of 7.74.

The best finish of the day went to freshman Kaci Papin, who was second in the high jump with a mark of 5'1". It would take a miracle to beat her in the event, Miracle Ailes of Keokuk to be exact, who jumped 5'5" to win in Jacksonville.

On the boys' side, Trevor Toberman finished 13th in the hurdles with a time of 9.27, while the 4x800 team of Joey Lipe/Ayden Brewer/Isaiah Atkins and Josh Bauman ran a 9:27.41 to finish 16th. Dominic Haggard also placed in the top 20, clearing nine feet in the pole vault to finish 14th.

A week later, Hillsboro was back at it, this time in Elsah at the Jersey Indoor Winter Thaw.

Kaci Papin again made her mark in the high jump, but had some familiar company in the top five. Papin would finish first with a 5'3" clearance, while her sister, sophomore Ashlyn Papin, was fifth with a mark of 4'9".

Huber would take fourth in the 200 meters with a time of 28.12 and was seventh in the 60 meter dash with a time of 8.25. She would also participate in the 4x200, joining the Papin sisters and Kylie Meier to run a 1:55.47 and finish fifth.

Emma Miller would be the other Lady Topper to compete. She would finish 16th in the shot put with a toss of 27'7".

On the boys' side, Hillsboro's best finish came in the 4x800 relay, where Eli Atkins, Isaiah Atkins, Josh Bauman and Ayden Brewer ran a 9:11.21 to finish seventh.

Eli Atkins would also finish 14th in the triple jump, with a mark of 33'5.5", while Noah McCormick was 13th in the 200 with a time of 25.89.

Hillsboro's first outdoor meet of the season will be on Tuesday, March 19, as they travel to Roxana to meet up with the Shells, Staunton and Vandalia.
