The Hillsboro girls cross country team kicked off its season at the Macoupin County Fairgrounds on Wednesday, Sept. 4.
Eight Lady Hiltoppers would run at the meet, which featured eight full teams and 84 runners. Hillsboro would finish sixth overall with 135 points, while Roxana was the team champion with 48.
Sierra Compton would be the top finisher for Hillsboro, running a 21:55.42 to finish 11th overall. Making her high school cross country debut, Compton was less than two seconds out of the top ten, despite going up against more experienced competition.
Madelyn Rupert and Riley Hemken entered the competition as the only two Toppers with cross country experience and had solid outings in their 2019 openers. Rupert, a two-time sectional qualifier, ran a 23:26.21 to finish 24th, while Hemken was 33rd with a 24:24.45.
Claire Tester and Vanessa Compton would provide the other two scoring times for Hillsboro. Tester would run a 25:56.64 to finish in 46th, while Compton was 50th with a 26:09.80.
In addition to the five scoring runners, Meagan White, Alecia Miller and Shelby Houchlei also ran for Hillsboro. White finished 60th with a time of 27:20.64, while Miller was 66th with a 28:20.89. Houchlei would finish in a time of 28:38.58, good enough for 69th on the day.
The Toppers' next meet will be on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at 4 p.m. at Schneider Park in Brighton.
