One of the subcommunities of the Hillsboro School District found a touch of relief from their passion for high school football Friday night, August 23, when the Toppers held an open-to-the-public scrimmage at Sawyer Field. The annual pre-season event gives parents, grandparents, and classmates a chance to see what the players have talked about all summer.
Afterward, aided by unseasonably cool weather, the spectators lingered, talking quietly about what they had just seen while savoring thoughts about the season that begins Friday, August 30, when Piasa Southwestern comes calling for a 7 p.m. kickoff. Anticipation seems high.
On the field the practice ended with conditioning sprints, sideline to sideline. Those followed a 20 minute, unofficiated scrimmage that featured two scores; the first was a short pass from senior Dylan McCammack to junior Ben Taylor, and the other was a short pass from probable starting quarterback Jace Tuetken to junior Tyson Compagni that became an exciting chase down the sideline nearest the grandstand. Had there been officials, that touchdown most likely would have been called back; Compagni benefitted from a clip, and his foot strayed out-of-bounds at least once.
Neither team could convert their extra points attempt, so the scoreboard read 6-6 when time expired.
A complete team roster was in last Monday's Journal-News; tentative starting lineups will be in Thursday's paper. Friday cheerleaders and band members will add to the festivities; be there early.
