Huber, Papins Headed To State

Posted

Last year, Kyra Huber was Hillsboro's lone representative at the IHSA State Finals as the Lady Toppers were bumped up to Class 2A in girls track. This year, Huber will still be making the trip, but she'll have some company with her.

Kaci Papin and Ashlyn Papin will join the HHS senior at Charleston when the state meet kicks off on Friday, May 17, after solid performances by the trio at the sectional at Lanphier High School on Wednesday, May 8.

For the fourth time in her career, Huber advanced to the IHSA State Finals in the 100 meter dash, running a 12.63 to finish fifth in a crowded field of Springfield's best sprinters. Huber's time was .03 seconds underneath the qualifying standard for Class 2A of 12.66.

One of the best female sprinters in the program's history, Huber was hoping to double up at sectionals and make it in the 400 meters as well. She would come up just short of that goal on Wednesday, finishing third with a stellar run of 1:01.11, just .75 seconds off the qualifying standard.

Both of the Papin sisters would reach state by virtue of the qualifying standard as well, although no one jumped higher than Kaci Papin at Lanphier. The freshman leaper would finish third, clearing 5'3" to match the top two finishers, Summer Williams of Southeast and Hannah Sechrest of East Alton-Wood River.

Ashlyn Papin would not be far behind as she cleared 5'1" to finish fourth behind her younger sister. The Hillsboro sophomore was one of three competitors to make it to state with a 5'1" clearance, joining Mary Gegen of Rochester and Jackalyn Woelfel of Civic Memorial.

In addition to the state qualifiers, Kylie Meier and Emma Miller also competed in the sectional.

Meier would finish 11th in the triple jump, posting a mark of 29'10.5". She also ran in the Toppers' 4x100 relay, recording a time of 51.45 with Huber and the Papins.

Miller would compete in the shot put and finished 21st overall with a mark of 27'8".

Huber goes into Friday's state meet with the 13th best sectional time, less than a second behind Serena Bolden of Springfield Southeast, who ran the best sectional time with an 11.74.

Both Papin sisters could be firmly in the race for a podium finish in the high jump. Kaci Papin's mark of 5'3" was only bested by two competitors' sectional marks, Breya Christopher of Galena and Diamonasia Taylor of Urbana, who both cleared 5'5" in their sectional performance.
