Indians Take Title, ‘Skins Slay Panthers

Carlyle Coach Janelle Kuhn’s young Lady Indians sealed the deal at the Litchfield Thanksgiving Tournament against Staunton Friday evening, Nov. 26, by virtue of a nail biter that went down to the wire.

In an exciting rough and tumble game that was filled with ebbs and tides for both teams, Carlyle was able to hold on for a 53-52 decision, their fourth win against no losses in the five team round robin tournament.

The presentation of the trophy was made by Dan Stewart, Litchfield High School’s athletic director, after Friday night’s championship’s win. Due to COVID, the annual tournament was not played in 2020 and it was Coach Steve Wooley’s Southwestern Piasa Birds who last held the championship trophy in the 2019 Turkey Classic.

Nokomis vs. Litchfield

The second game Friday night pitted the Nokomis Lady Redskins and the Litchfield Lady Panthers, their second meeting within the last 10 days. Coach Brandon Engelman’s Lady Redskins defeated Litchfield 52-20 in their season opener on Nov. 16 at Litchfield and their second meeting produced a similar score as the Lady Panther offense connected for just seven shots from the floor and lost 50-18.

Coach Rob Corso’s limited lineup fell behind 11-4 after the first quarter and trailed 28-8 at the half.

Using his bench players freely in the third period, the Nokomis offense was not as potent and both teams sank just five points in the frame, but the 18-point third quarter Redskin lead ballooned to 30 late in the fourth and the continuous clock was activated before the horn sounded to signal a 50-18 Redskin win, their second decision against a solo loss to the tournament champions on Nov. 22.

Nokomis placed two players in double figures with Audrey Sabol leading the charge with 15 points, followed closely by Addison Dangbar with 12. Dangbar accounted for the Redskins only three-point basket. Nokomis canned 19-53 shots from the floor but snagged just 1-of-18 from behind the arc.

They converted 11-of-19 charity tosses, grabbed 17 offensive and 14 defensive boards and had 24 steals and 12 assists. Sabol went 5-of-10 from the floor and 5-of-10 from the free-throw line. In addition, the six-foot junior picked 13 rebounds off the glass.

Emma Sneddon had seven points and pulled down six caroms. Addison Dangbar led the team with 10 defensive swipes, canned 5-of-8 free throws and had three assists.

The Panthers were 7-of-44 from the floor and 1-of-7 from behind the arc. They converted 3-of-10 charity tosses and grabbed 15 offensive and 20 defensive rebounds with Hailey Rentz leading the team with six offensive and six defensive.

Lily Braasch recorded eight rebounds and had two assists while Laura Boston had six rebounds and scored two points. Freshman Elise Walch and sophomore Madisyn Bremerkamp each scored four points as did Braasch and Rentz. Walch connected for Litchfield’s only three-pointer.
