Property tax bills in Montgomery County will be mailed out by Friday, May 29, and the first installment will be due on Thursday, July 2.
The late payment penalty for the first installment will be waived for those who need assistance due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Montgomery County Treasurer Nikki Lohman, but the entire bill needs to be paid before the second installment due date on Friday, Sept. 4, or the first installment penalty will be charged retroactive to July 2.
“The Montgomery County Board and I recognize that we are experiencing an unprecedented time and want to help the taxpayers,” Lohman said. “In doing so, we also have to ensure the taxing districts receive the funds necessary to sustain the essential services crucial to our residents. We urge those who can pay in a timely manner to please continue to do so for financial stability of our taxing districts.”
Escrowed tax payments are not subject to the waived penalty and must be submitted by the installment dates.
Lohman said the best way to make tax payments this year is either by mail to Montgomery County Treasurer and Collector, 1 Courthouse Square, Room 101, Hillsboro, IL 62049; by the gray drop box on the north side of the Historic Courthouse in Hillsboro; online on the treasurer’s page at montgomeryco.com; or at most local banks.
In-person payments can be arranged if absolutely necessary.
Lohman thanked Supervisor of Assessments Ray Durston and staff and County Clerk Sandy Leitheiser and staff “for their diligence in getting the 2019 tax information to the treasurer’s office for processing.”
