M. Jacquinot "Jackie" Hawkins, 89, of Hillsboro, died Tuesday, March 5, 2024, at Montgomery Nursing and Rehab in Hillsboro.
Visitation was from 10 until time of service at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 9, at Marks Mortuary in Wood River. Burial was followed in Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.
Mrs. Hawkins was born Nov. 14, 1934 in Potosi, MO, the daughter of Russell Julius and Florence Lucille (Brase) Mouser. On Aug. 2, 1953 in Arkansas, she married William "Bill" M. Hawkins, and he preceded her in death on Dec. 21, 2006.
Mrs. Hawkins graduated from East Alton-Wood River High School in 1952. In the 1970s, she completed data processing training at NCR Corporate Technical Education Center in Dayton, OH. She was a homemaker for many years and sold Tupperware in the 1960s. Her family relocated to Hillsboro in 1968. She began working at Hillsboro Hospital in 1971, and in 1975, when the "new" Hillsboro Area Hospital was completed, she was head of the first data processing department. She later worked at the Hillsboro Journal, Montgomery County Extension Office and Montgomery County National Bank-Capri IGA Branch. In 2011, she moved to Auburn, but returned to Hillsboro in October 2023.
Mrs. Hawkins was a Christian and was strong in her faith. She was a member of the Auburn United Methodist Church. She was a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star, where she had served as Worthy Matron three times. She was a Girl Scout leader in Wood River for several years before moving to Hillsboro. She was a Sunday School teacher and was a first aid instructor for the American Red Cross.
Mrs. Hawkins is survived by her daughter, Connie (Joe) Michelich of Auburn and sons, Russ (Leilani) Hawkins of Putman and Dale (Kathy) Hawkins of Panama; 17 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Shirley Ann Hawkins in 1959; siblings and their spouses, Yvonne (Don) Brown, Joan (Mel) Gordon, Lorraine (Norbert "Woody") Woods and Maurice (Frankie) Norton.
