Jan Lee Schaefer, 68, of Staunton, died Friday, May 3, 2019, at St. Louis University Hospital in St. Louis, MO.
Visitation will be held Thursday, May 9, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Williamson Funeral Home in Staunton.
Funeral services will be held Friday, May 10, at 10:30 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Staunton with the Rev. Kelly Mitteis officiating. Burial will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery in Staunton.
Mr. Schaefer was born Jan. 8, 1951, in Litchfield, a son of the late. Elton O. "Peck" and Marcella M. (Wall) Schaefer. He married Pam Behrens on Oct. 16, 1971, and they later divorced.
He was a correctional officer at Graham Correctional Center in Hillsboro for 22 years. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Staunton–Board of Evangelism at Zion and Bocci Club of Concordia Hall of Staunton.
A big Cardinals fan, he was an author of two short stories. He also enjoyed gardening and landscaping, and had a great love of humor and sarcasm. He was a doting father, grandfather and a humble philanthropist.
He is survived by two daughters, Janeen (Michael) Griewing of Edwardsville and Danelle (Buddy) Bartels of Mahomet; five grandchildren, Brayden and Eastyn Griewing, Kameron, Marinne and Estella Bartels; former spouse and good friend, Pam Schaefer of Hillsboro; sister-in-law, Sharon Schaefer of Staunton; and two nephews, Jeff and Kevin Schaefer.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Krista Schaefer; one grandson, Isaiah Griewing; and one brother, Ronnie Schaefer.
Memorials may be made to the family for Neurological Research in his memory, Zion Lutheran Church of Staunton or to Adopt-A-Pet of Benld.
