Nokomis would jump out to an early lead on Friday, Sept. 13, but weren't able to hold off a hard-charging Marquette squad, who came away with a 58-25 victory.
The Redskins would rush for 270 yards in the game, including two touchdowns each for Adam Lyons and Alex Tosetti. Lyons would lead the team in rushing with 148 yards on 26 carries.
Senior Ryan Janssen also carried the ball 22 times for 115 yards, but Janssen's offense wasn't the highlight of Friday's game. Janssen had eight solo tackles and three assists in the game, pushing him over the 300 tackle mark for his career to 301.
That total also moved him into first overall in the school's record books for tackles, eclipsing the mark of 297, set by Ben Marley in 2017. The 2018 grad may have hit the 300 tackle mark himself, but a week six injury kept him on the sidelines for the final three games.
For Janssen, the record cements his spot in Nokomis football lore with other defensive standouts like Marley and Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster, who held the school tackles record for 40 years with 286.
"I feel really honored to be a part of this Redskin family and program that has had many great football players throughout the years. I am truly blessed to be recognized amongst those who have had a direct impact on the success of our football tradition," Janssen said about his spot in the Nokomis recordbooks. "A big thank you to all my coaches, family, friends and current and former teammates. None of this would be possible without them!"
The loss was Nokomis' second of the season after a 31-24 victory over Sullivan/Okaw Valley in week one. The Redskins will look to pick up win number two on Friday, Sept. 20, when they travel to Dupo.
