Jean Catherine Stahlschmidt, 80, of rural New Douglas, died on Friday, Nov. 13, 2020, at Faith Country Side Care Center in Highland.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, Nov. 18, from 4 to 7 p.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Staunton. A Funeral Mass will be held Thursday, Nov. 19, beginning at 11 a.m. at the church. Burial will follow at New Douglas Cemetery. There will be a limit of 92 people in the church at one time, and they will be required to wear masks and social distance. Lesicko Funeral Home in Livingston is assisting the family.

Mrs. Stahlschmidt was born Nov. 1, 1940, near Coffeen in East Fork Township, to Vernon and Catherine (Huber) Boas. She married Kenneth Stahlschmidt on Sept. 12, 1970, in Coffeen, and he survives.

She was an accountant for Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville for 25 years, retiring in 2009.

Mrs. Stahlschmidt attended St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Staunton, Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Livingston, and the former St. Ubaldus Catholic Church in New Douglas. Additionally, she was part of the St. Michael’s Church Women’s Group.

She was a member of the New Douglas PTO (Parent Teachers Organization) and served as the secretary for many years.  She was actively involved in Rural Youth and the Catholic Youth organizations.  She enjoyed their reunions and had the opportunity to travel and see many parts of the United States and Canada.

Mrs. Stahlschmidt worked with antique furniture, refinishing and collecting.  She helped her husband around the farm.  They enjoyed attending community events such as homecomings, sausage suppers, the Octoberfest, and the New Douglas Fire Department Breakfast.  They also participated in bowling leagues and liked to dance.  

Of course, above all she loved and enjoyed being with her family, especially her grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Stahlschmidt is survived by her daughters, Annette (husband Dennis) Hartlieb and Beth (husband Kevin) Potthast; five grandchildren, Alexi, Bryce and Mason Hartlieb and Eric and Matthew Potthast; siblings, Margie Casey, Virginia (husband Kenny) Polo, Loretta (husband Dan) Campbell, Martha Ellis, Joe Boas and Anthony (wife Ginger) Boas; sisters-in-law, Margie Ford, Judy (husband Arnold) Klein, Agnes (husband Parviz Nikrawesh)Stahlschmidt, Janet (husband Tom) Hohenstein, Alice (husband Ed) Delahanty, Helen King, Nancy Stahlschmidt, Pat (husband Steve Loe) Stahlschmidt and Grace (husband Jimmy Taylor) Stahlschmidt; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Bob Boas, Fred Boas, Bernadine Johnson and Louise Boas; and brothers-in-law, Melvin Casey, Larry Ellis and Danny King.

Memorials may be directed to the New Douglas Fire Department or to the family for presentation to community and education based organizations.
