Jerry D. Hayes, 75, of Irving, died on Monday, July 19, 2021, at 4:18 p.m. at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.

Visitation will be held Friday, Aug. 6, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Bass Patton Dean Funeral Home in Hillsboro. Funeral services will follow, beginning at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Stefan Munker, pastor of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hillsboro, officiating. Burial will be held at Oak Grove Cemetery in Hillsboro at a later date. Cremation rites were accorded.

Mr. Hayes was born July 12, 1946, in Hillsboro, to Louis E. and Ruth (Howerton) Hayes. He married Sharol Keune on Dec. 11, 1966, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hillsboro, and she survives.

He graduated from Hillsboro High School with the class of 1964, and attended University of Illinois in Champaign for a year-and-a-half, as well as Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield.

Mr. Hayes served his country in the U.S. Army for two years during the Vietnam War Era. He was stationed in Anchorage, AK.

During his career, he worked in information systems for the Capital Development Board for the State of Illinois.

Mr. Hayes was a member of Wares Grove Lutheran Church in Butler. Throughout his life, he resided in Hillsboro and Butler Grove Township.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Shelly Bergman of Litchfield; grandchildren, Alicia Dewitt, Alainna Dewitt and Brenden Dewitt; great-grandchildren, Dylan Dewitt; siblings,  Joann (husband Bob) Pearson, Joy Lemon and Georgia (husband Cliff) Eller; and special friend, T.J. Dewitt.

Mr. Hayes was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Louise Westcott and Earl Hayes.

Memorials may be directed to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hillsboro or Paws Care of Montgomery County.
