John D. Meckles, 84, of Staunton, died Saturday, Oct. 10, 2020, at Heritage Health in Staunton.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Williamson Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Mr. Meckles was born Dec. 27, 1935, in Litchfield, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John C. and Jennie D. (Berry) Meckles. He married Lois E. Nepute on Aug. 22, 1959, in Benld, and she preceded him in death on Dec. 20, 2001.

He worked as an inhouse service representative for the Internal Revenue Service for 18 years, retiring in 2001. He was also a co-owner of the “66” Terminal near Staunton for 35 years. He served as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps for four years. 

A member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church of Staunton, he was also a member of the  Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks (BPOE) Club in Litchfield, the Staunton Country Club and a founding board member of First Community State Bank of Staunton, now Bank of Springfield.

He is survived by one son, Jay (Lora) Meckles of Four Seasons, MO; one daughter, Maria (Mark) Langston of Maplewood, MO; and five grandchildren, Jennifer Meckles (husband Nathan) Higgens of Denver, CO, Johnny Meckles of Columbia, MO, Connor Vanallman of New York City, NY, and Michael Langston and Matthew Langston, both of Maplewood, MO.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one son, Roman A. Meckles.

Memorials may be made to the Community Hospital of Staunton or to Heritage Health Staunton  Hospice Unit.
