John M. Patton, 68, of Springfield, died on Thursday, Sept. 14, at Memorial Hospital in Springfield.

Graveside services were held on Wednesday, Sept. 20, at Memorial Park Cemetery in Staunton. The Rev. Stephen Thompson officiated the service. Staab Funeral Home assisted the family.

Mr. Patton was born on April 17, 1955 in Staunton to the late Peter J. and Rosemary (Baumann) Patton.

He attended Hillsboro schools until transferring to a military academy for his last two years of high school. A natural athlete when he attended Hillsboro schools, he was a starter on the Hillsboro Junior High School eighth grade basketball team that played in the IESA state tournament in 1969.

While in town, the Patton family operated Patton Funeral Home in Hillsboro (now Bass Patton Dean Funeral Home) at the corner of South Main and West Tremont. The family still supports the Patton Memorial Scholarship given to Hillsboro High School graduates planning to attend Lincoln Land Community College through the Lincoln Land Community College Foundation.

Mr. Patton is survived by three sisters, Penny (Mike) Noel of Chesterfield, MO, Connie Patton Stelbrink of Springfield and Michelle “Mickey” (Brian) Lauer of Springfield; two nieces, Allie Brent of Jacksonville, FL and Angela (Ben) Christanson of Chesterfield, MO; one nephew, Alex Noel of Chesterfield, MO; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, George S. Patton.
