Jonathan David (‘JD’) Morgan, 35, of Jacksonville, NC, died on Sunday, Jan. 10, 2021.

Visitation will be held on Monday, Jan. 18, from 1 to 2 p.m. at Jones Funeral Home in Jacksonville, NC. Services will follow at 2 p.m., at the funeral home. Jones Funeral Home in Jacksonville, NC, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Mr. Morgan was born on Nov. 17, 1985, in Warren, MI, the son of Laura (Michael) Zerfowski of Hillsboro and David W. (Betty) Morgan of Fairhope, AL. He married the love of his life, Miguel Gonzales, on July 20, 2018.

Mr. Morgan graduated from Hillsboro High School in 2004. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 2005 and held the rank of Gunnery Sergeant. Mr. Morgan deployed twice to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom with HMH-361, the Flying Tigers. For the last four years he was attached to VMX-1, the Winged Lions. Officially he was a Collateral Duty Quality Assurance Representative (CDQAR) for the Avionics Division on the CH-53E and K.

Mr. Morgan’s family will remember him for his infectious laugh, quick wit and ability to find humor in everything. Mr. Morgan excelled in his job. He was a mentor to many Marines and had a profound impact on those he taught.

Mr. Morgan is survived by his husband; parents; and step-brothers, Brett (Brandy) Zerfowski, Scott Barnes and Greg Barnes; along with his two dalmations, Storm and Gambit.
