Kelly Dean Matthews, 62, of Hillsboro, died at home surrounded by his family on Tuesday, May 5, 2026.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, May 16, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Hough-Dean Funeral Home in Hillsboro.

Mr. Matthews was born on Nov. 28, 1963, in Hillsboro, a son to Kenneth “Red” and Dorothy (Moroney) Matthews. He attended Hillsboro High School. On July 19, 2003, he and the former Alice Reynolds were married in an outdoor ceremony in Taylor Springs, and she survives.

For 25 years, he was employed as a laborer by Union Hall Local 1084 in Hillsboro. His dedicated service to his union  was apparent in his willingness to serve in various positions, including sergeant-at-Arms, vice president and the executive Board. In his free time, he enjoyed fishing, shooting, riding his side-by-side and spending time with his family.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Matthews is survived by his daughter, Trish (Chris) Roemelin of Hillsboro; brothers, Rick Matthews of Taylor Springs, Terry (Vickie) Matthews of Hillsboro and Chad (Renee) Matthews of Taylor Springs; sister, Debby Hampton of Taylor Springs; grandchildren, Libby Felix of Madison, WI, Brooke (Matthew) Furlow of Litchfield and Emilee Roemelin of Creve Coeur, MO; great-grandson, Jaxson Dean Furlow who shares his middle name; another great-grandchild on the way; and his beloved dog, Lilly.

He was preceded in death by his parents; stepson, Eric Felix; and sister, Vickie Slagel.

The family suggests memorial donations be made to the family of Willa White.
