The growth of the Hillsboro girls golf team continued at regionals on Thursday, Oct. 10, and nearly earned the Lady Hiltoppers a qualifying spot as a team in the sectionals.
The Hillsboro girls would come together late in the season and make great strides, including a third place finish at the South Central Conference meet. On Thursday, they took another step, finishing fourth at the Okaw Valley Regional at Eagle Creek Golf Course in Findlay.
The Toppers would shoot a 482 as a team, 32 strokes behind Tuscola for the third and final team sectional qualifying spot. Charleston would take the championship at the regional with a 410, while Mt. Zion was second with a 446.
While Hillsboro didn't make it to sectionals as a team, they did advance two players through as individuals.
Senior Erin Kistner and junior Anna Colwell would both move on to the next level after they finished among the top ten players not on an advancing team.
Kistner would not only finish among the top ten in that group, she finished in the top ten overall with a 105, which was good enough for sixth overall. Charleston's Hannah Harpster would be the only player to break 90 on the day, shooting an 89 to earn medalist honors.
Colwell would take the tenth and final qualifying spot with a 121, which was good enough for 24th overall.
Felisity Luevano and Meagan Jorn would contribute the other two scoring rounds for Hillsboro. Luevano was 30th with a 127, while Jorn was tied for 32nd with a 129.
Freshmen Alexandra Frailey and Aurelie Granito also played for Coach Adam Haston's squad, shooting rounds of 133 and 154 in their postseason debuts.
Toppers at Sectionals
With their success at regionals, Kistner and Colwell moved on to the Jacksonville Routt Sectional on Monday, Oct. 14, at the Jacksonville Country Club.
Unfortunately, neither Kistner nor Colwell were able to grab one of the ten individual qualifying spots, the last two of which went to Auburn's Ellie Knight and Bismark-Henning-Rossville-Alvin's Allison Tucker with a pair of 88s.
Sacred Heart-Griffin would take the team title with a 332, while Macomb and St. Thomas More were the other two advancing teams with a 340 and a 341. St. Thomas More's Alaina Bowie would take medalist honors with a 73.
