Lady Hiltoppers Pick Up SCC Win Over Carlinville

The Hillsboro High School volleyball team scored another South Central Conference victory on Thursday, Oct. 17, beating a talented Carlinville squad on the Cavies home court.

Hillsboro would lose the first game by a razor thin 29-27 margin, but didn't let the setback dictate the match. The Hiltoppers would go on to win game two by five points, 25-20, then handed the Cavaliers their third SCC loss with a 25-22 final set.

Kaci Papin and Kayli Ward would have double digit kill totals for the second game in a row as Papin led the team with 13 kills, while Ward added 12. Emily Reynolds and Chloe Beck also had four kills apiece, while Jordan Jacobs and Reagan DeVaisher handled setting duties with 14 assists each.

Defensively, Ally Devore led the team with 12 digs, followed by Emily Reynolds with six and Haley Major with two. Major also put down a block for the Toppers.

Major came up big at the service line as well, leading the team with 13 points. Kayli Ward added ten points and two aces, while Ally Devore chipped in four points off a team-best four aces.

The win improved Hillsboro's record to 6-1 in the SCC, with games against Litchfield on Oct. 22 and at Pana on Oct. 24 still left on the schedule. The Toppers currently sit second in the conference with Staunton, who is also 6-1, while Pana is on top at 7-0. Their next game is Monday, Oct. 21, at home against Morrisonville.

Lady Toppers Sixth At Freeburg Monster Mash

In order to battle test themselves for the postseason, which includes a regional that includes Breese Central, Staunton and Greenville, the Hillsboro volleyball team traveled to the Freeburg Monster Mash on Saturday, Oct. 19. The Toppers would go 2-2 at the tournament, good enough to finish sixth overall in the 12-team tourney.

Hillsboro would pick up one of those wins in pool play, with a victory over  Steeleville in their opening game 25-21, 25-17.

Kaci Papin continued her hard hitting ways, posting 12 kills, while Kayli Ward added six point scoring hits. Jordan Jacobs led the team in assists, with nine, while Reagan DeVaisher added eight. 

Chloe Beck would pace the Toppers in serving with nine points and an ace, while Ward added eight points and an ace as well. Beck also led the team in digs with ten, while Haley Major added nine. Major and Emma Miller led the team in blocks with two apiece.

In their other pool play game, Nashville would defeat the Toppers 25-19, 25-15 en route to a tournament championship.

Beck and Major led the team in serving with five and four points respectively, while Papin put down a team-best eight kills. Ward also had four kills, while DeVaisher and Jacobs combined for nine assists.

Defensively, Ally Devore led the team with 11 digs, while Emily Reynolds (six) and Maria Hernandez (five) combined for 11 more.

The split in pool play sent the Toppers to the silver bracket, where they would go up against Okawville in their semifinal match. Hilsboro would take down the Rockets in three games, 19-25, 25-18, 15-8.

The Toppers had a big game defensively, with four players posting double digit dig totals, led by Maria Hernandez with 19 and Ally Devore with 18. Chloe Beck and Emily Reynolds would also have 11 digs apiece, while Emma Miller (two) and Kaci Papin (one) added blocks.

On the attack, Kayli Ward led the team with seven kills, while Chloe Beck finished with six. Papin and Miller both added five kills apiece, while Beck (12) and Jacobs (10) had 22 assists.

Devore would lead the team in serving with 11 points, while Jacobs added six and Ward finished with five. Jacobs also had two aces in the win.

The win moved Hillsboro to the fifth place match, where they would take on Benton. The Rangers would hang on for a 26-24 first set win, then knocked off the Toppers 25-20 in game two.

Hillsboro's defense would again play well, with Beck and Jacobs posting 12 digs apiece, followed by Reynolds and Hernandez with ten and eight digs.

On the serving line, Beck led the way with five, while Haley Major chipped in four points, including two aces.

On the attack, Kayli Ward put down seven kills, followed by Papin and Beck with four apiece. Jacobs led the team with ten assists,while Beck added to her solid overall performance with eight assists.

The 2-2 mark at Freeburg gives Hillsboro a record of 18-10 going into the final week of the regular season, equalling their win total from a year ago. With Morrisonville, Litchfield and Pana still on the schedule, the opportunity is there for the Toppers to secure their first 20-win season since 2016 before regionals start on Oct. 28, at Greenville against the Comets.
