Lady Hiltoppers Take Staunton To Three Games

Posted

The Hillsboro volleyball team faced a tough test on Thursday, Sept. 19, as they traveled to Staunton to take on the Lady Bulldogs.

Staunton entered the game with five straight wins and a 10-3 record overall, but the Toppers took it to the Bulldogs early and scored a 26-24 victory in game one. The Bulldogs would rally to force a game three though, winning 25-15 in game two, before holding off the Hiltoppers in the rubber match for a 25-20 win.

“Staunton is a tough team with a ton of talent, one of the strongest teams in our conference,” Coach Emily Zimmerman said. “We played hard and didn’t make it easy for them.  I thought it was one of our better games defensively, which is a step in the right direction for us.”

Ally Devore reach double digit digs for the Toppers, posting a team-best 15, while Kaci Papin (two), Emma Miller (one) and Haley Major (one) added blocks. The attack was led by Kayli Ward and Kaci Papin, who had nine and eight kills respectively. On the service line, Chloe Beck led the team with ten service points, while Devore had five points and three aces.

Father McGivney

Prior to the match-up with Staunton, the Toppers took on Father McGivney in a rematch of a Montgomery County Invitational pool play game. As they did in Nokomis, Hillsboro would earn a two set victory, 25-19, 25-20, over the Griffins to pick up win number five on the season.

Kayli Ward would lead Hillsboro with eight kills on the day, while Kaci Papin and Emily Reynolds had four kills each. Jordan Jacobs and Reagan DeVaisher both had eight assists on offense.

Ally Devore and Emily Reynolds would contribute six service points apiece, with DeVaisher and Ward adding five apiece.

Defensively, Devore led the team with five digs, while Papin and Chloe Beck had a block each.

The Toppers will face another tough conference foe on Wednesday, Sept. 25, when Roxana comes to town. The Shells finished second in the Grace Filled Tourney to Staunton this year, but are 0-2 in the South Central Conference, with losses to Carlinville and Pana.
