The Lincolnwood High School softball team completed the season sweep of the Nokomis Redskins on Thursday, May 13, but it was far from a gimme for the orange and black.
After beating Nokomis 11-1 on Tuesday, May 11, Lincolnwood seemed poised to put down the Redskins again as they scored eight runs in the first two innings on Thursday.
The first of those eight runs came in the bottom of the first. Sidney Glick walked, stole second and scored on a single by Avery Pope. Nokomis would get the next two outs, but Pope, who stole second and moved to third on a ground out, scored on a single by Taryn Millburg. Back-to-back singles by Paige Rainwater and Marisa Webb moved Millburg around the bases and made it a 3-0 ball game before the Redskins got the final out.
In the second inning, Desi Pitchford led off with a single, then moved to second on an error. Pope would come through again as she reached on another error, which allowed Pitchford to score.
A four-run lead quickly became a six-run advantage after back-to-back singles by Cassie Krager and Brittany Slightom, and then 7-0 following a double by Millburg that plated Slightom. Millburg too would score, two batters later on a double by Webb as Nokomis trailed 8-0 two innings into the contest.
The Redskins would try to come back though, scoring three runs in the third on a walk by Mia Fesser, a double by Addison Dangbar, a fielder’s choice from Karli Wanger and a single by Emma Hill.
Three more runs would come in the fourth inning, with Emma Sneddon starting off the frame with a single. The Lancers would get two quick outs, but Dangbar plated Sneddon with a single and consecutive doubles by Aubrey Jaros and Karli Wanger made it 8-6 in Lincolnwood’s favor.
After trailing by eight, six outs into the game, Nokomis clawed their way all the way back by the fifth inning as they scored twice more. Kristen Stauder walked and Emma Sneddon singled to start the inning, with Stauder scoring two batters later on a fielder’s choice. A walk and a sacrifice fly would bring Sneddon in and tied the game at 8-8 before Lincolnwood collected the final out.
As quickly as the tie came, it soon disappeared, despite Nokomis getting the first two outs quickly in the bottom of the fifth. Avery Pope tripled for the first hit of the fifth by the Lancers, then scored on a single by Cassie Krager. Krager would come in to score on a double by Brittany Slightom, with Taryn Millburg driving in Slightom on another two-bagger that made it 11-8.
Those three runs would prove to be enough for the Lancers as Nokomis picked up just two more hits in the game.
Lincolnwood outhit the Redskins 16-12 in the slugfest, with 11 different players contributing multiple hits, led by Taryn Millburg, Cassie Krager and Marisa Webb each posting three hits for Lincolnwood. Mia Fesser, Addison Dangbar, Reaghan Jonas, Emma Hill and Emma Sneddon all had two hits for Nokomis, while Brittany Slightom, Avery Pope and Desi Pitchford also had two hits for the Lancers.
Millburg would get the win in relief for Lincolnwood, allowing just two hits in two and two-thirds innings with three strikeouts. Paige Rainwater started the game for the Lancers, allowing eight runs on ten hits with six strikeouts and three walks in four and a third innings.
Reaghan Jonas took the loss for Nokomis, allowing three runs on seven hits with five strikeouts in four innings of relief. Aubrey Jaros started the game and gave up eight runs (six earned) on nine hits and two walks.
