Lady Lancers Fall To Ponies, Miners

The learning process continued for the first-year Lincolnwood girls basketball team on Dec. 5 and 6, as Coach Justin Millburg’s squad took on South Fork and Gillespie.

On Thursday, Dec. 5, the Lancers traveled to Kincaid to face the Ponies and fell 44 to 18.

South Fork jumped out to an early lead thanks to Mackenzie Harmon and Emallee Howe, who scored seven points apiece to account for 14 of the Ponies’ 18 points. The Lancers would be down 15 after the opening eight minutes, with Cassie Krager scoring all three points for Lincolnwood.

Harmon and Howe would come up big again in the second, combining for ten points, while Riley Burney added four as the Ponies took a 32-7 lead into halftime. Katelyn Payne had all four points for the Lancers.

Lincolnwood would have their most productive quarter in the third as they outscored the Ponies 9-5 to shave four points off the lead. All nine points came from behind the arc for the Lancers as Sydney Herman hit two threes, with Avery Pope knocking down another to make it 37-16.

The lid would go back on the basket in the fourth though, as Lincolnwood was held to two free throws by Cassie Krager. South Fork wouldn’t score much either, putting in just seven points as they came away with the 44-18 win.

Harmon would lead all scorers with 16 points, while Herman led the Lancers with six. Krager would add five for Lincolnwood, while Payne added four and Pope contributed three.

Saturday’s game at home against Gillespie wouldn’t be as close as the 3-1 Miners held Lincolnwood to just six points in a 61-6 loss at the Woodshed in Raymond.

Gillespie scored 22 points in the first quarter, spread between seven different players, and never looked back. The 22-1 first quarter lead grew to 34-4 by the end of the half and 52-6 after three quarters. The fourth frame would go quickly, with Gillespie shutting out the Lancers 9-0 to finish off the 56-point win.

Cassie Krager led Lincolnwood with three points, followed by Avery Pope with two and Sophie Rainwater with one.

Lincolnwood's next game is Thursday, Dec. 12, at home against South County.
