Lady Lancers Fall To Staunton In Eight Innings

Seven innings wasn't enough for the Lincolnwood and Staunton softball teams on Saturday, March 16, as the Lady Bulldogs beat out the Lady Lancers 9-8 in eight innings.

Playing in Staunton for their debut, the Lincolnwood girls got off to a quick start as they got back-to-back doubles to start the game by Sidney Glick and Brittney Slightom. Slightom's two-bagger drove in Glick and gave Lincolnwood a quick 1-0 lead.

After a strikeout for out number one, Sadie Slightom drove in the game's second run as she reached on an error, allowing Brittney Slightom to come in to score.

The Lady Lancers would get another hit in the inning, a single by Maggie McClelland, but Staunton starter Tori Kierbach would get out of the inning with her third strikeout of the frame.

Staunton would get one of those runs back in the second inning on a single, a passed ball and a ground out, but Lincolnwood held on for the 2-1 lead after one.

The Lady Bulldogs would take their first lead of the game in the bottom of the fourth, with two runs on two hits and an error, but Lincolnwood would charge back in the top of the fifth.

Sydney Herman was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Sydney Glick made Kierbach pay for the mistake as she lifted a home run over the left field fence for a two-run shot. The homer gave Lincolnwood the lead again as the Lancers led 4-3 after five innings.

Lincolnwood wasn't done, scoring four more times in the top of the sixth to make it 8-3 going into the bottom of the sixth.

The Bulldogs would finally get to Slightom in the sixth though, as they scored three runs on three hits to close the gap to two runs.

The Lancers would be held scoreless in the seventh inning as they led 8-6 with the Bulldogs down to their final at-bats. Staunton would start off the inning with a single, before Slightom got the second hitter of the inning to pop out to Cassie Krager.

Rebecca Caldieraro would cut the lead down to one though, stroking a single up the middle to score Hannah Dustman and make it 8-7. After a hit batter, Ashleigh Painter doubled down the left field line to score Caldieraro. Savanah Billings, who was hit by the pitch two batters earlier, tried to score as well, but was tagged out on a throw from Sydney Glick to Brittney Slightom at the plate.

Sadie Slightom would strike out the final batter of the inning and bonus softball was in order with the score tied at 8-8 going into the eighth.

Lincolnwood would get a batter on with Glick's third hit of the day, but wasn't able to score in their half of the extra frame.

Kierbach would start off the inning for Staunton with a single and would come around to score after a pop out and a bunt by Koral Keehner for the game winner.

Slightom would finish with five strikeouts and six earned runs allowed in the loss as the Bulldogs picked up ten hits in the game.

Lincolnwood had six hits, with Glick going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs, and Maggie McClelland going 2-for-2 with a pair of singles.

The Lady Lancers will look for their first win on Monday, March 18, when they take on Vandalia at home, followed by a road trip to Athens on Tuesday, March 19.
