Lady Lancers Gain Experience In Busy Week

Posted

After a break for the holidays, this week brought a new challenge to the Lincolnwood High School girls basketball program. The Lady Lancers would play three games in four days, including their first two back-to-back games of the season.

On Wednesday, Jan. 8, the Lady Lancers took on a solid Greenfield-Northwestern team, who finished third at this year’s Carlinville Holiday Tournament. The Tigers would jump out to an early 27-4 lead and would never look back as they won 59-18.

Greenfield-Northwestern would have ten field goals in the first quarter, two more than Lincolnwood would have for the game, as they led by 23 after the opening eight minutes. The pace would slow after that, but the Tigers still led 40-8 at halftime.

In the second half, Greenfield-Northwestern continued to hit from three-point range, adding three more treys to give themselves eight for the game. Going into the fourth, the Tigers led 57-15, with Lincolnwood outscoring the hosts 3-2 in the final frame to finish off the contest.

Kaitlyn Foiles would lead a balanced scoresheet for Greenfield-Northwestern with 13 points, while Maggie McClelland and Katelyn Payne led Lincolnwood with four each. Sydney Herman and Avery Pope each hit a three-pointer in the game for the Lancers, with Mary Anderson and Sophie Rainwater rounding out the scoring with two each.

Lincolnwood vs. Pawnee

The following night, the Lady Lancers were back on the road as they played at Pawnee on Thursday, Jan. 9. Lincolnwood would have their second highest point total of the season as they fell to the Indians 41-20.

The Lancers would hold an 8-7 lead after the first quarter, getting four points from both Cassie Krager and Katelyn Payne. Krager would follow with four more points in the second quarter, while Maggie McClelland added a pair of free throws for Lincolnwood. The Indians countered in the second with Abbey Specht and Paige Langheim, who combined for nine points and gave Pawnee a 21-14 lead at halftime.

Pawnee would continue to find ways to the basket in the third quarter, while holding the Lady Lancers to a basket by McClelland to make it 35-16 going into the fourth quarter.

Sydney Herman would net four points in the final frame, hitting a three and a free throw, but Pawnee finished off the 21-point win.

Cassie Krager would lead Lincolnwood with eight points, while Herman, Katelyn Payne and Maggie McClelland all had four points apiece.

Lincolnwood vs. EAWR

In their final game to a busy end of the week, Lincolnwood hosted East Alton-Wood River on Saturday, Jan. 11. The Oilers came into the game winners of eight of their last nine and extended their current win streak to five games with a 53-10 victory over the Lady Lancers.

The visitors from the Metro-East outscored Lincolnwood 11-1 in the first quarter and led 21-5 at halftime. They would more than double their score in the third quarter, netting 26 points to make it a 47-6 contest after three. The abbreviated fourth quarter would be closer, with the Oilers only outscoring Lincolnwood 6-4 to end the contest.

Kayla Brantley would lead East Alton-Wood River with 16 points, 12 of which came off four three pointers. The Oilers would have eight threes as a team, accounting for 24 of their 53 points.

Lincolnwood was led by Katelyn Payne with five, followed by Haelee Damm and Avery Pope with two and Sophie Rainwater with one.

Now 0-10 on the season, the Lady Lancers will travel to Springfield on Monday, Jan. 13, to face the Lutheran Crusaders. After that, they’ll play South County at home on Friday, Jan. 17.
