Lady Lancers Take Two From Wildcats

The end result was the same, but the way the Lincolnwood softball team picked up a pair of wins over Edinburg to start the week couldn't have been more different.

On Monday, April 1, the Lady Lancers squeezed out a 2-0 victory over the Wildcats in Edinburg, then followed that up with a 14-4 shellacking of the 'Cats the following day in Raymond. The wins improved Lincolnwood's record to 3-5 on the season.

Sydney Herman would be the hero of the first win as she threw seven innings of shutout ball and drove in both runs in the sixth inning.

Marisa Webb would walk to start off the top of the sixth, then moved up on a single by Desi Pitchford. Edinburg would get their first out of the inning on a fielder's choice off the bat of Katelyn Payne of Lincolnwood, but Herman singled to score both Webb and Payne and make it 2-0.

Edinburg would threaten in the sixth and seventh, getting two runners on in each inning, but Herman would get a pop up to the mound and a strikeout with runners on second and third to sew up the win.

The Lancers would outhit Edinburg 8-5 in the game, with Brittney Slightom going 3-for-4 with three singles to lead the offensive attack. In addition to Slightom and Herman, Sidney Glick, Sadie Slightom, Maggie McClelland and Desi Pitchford also had hits in the win.

Herman would finish the game with two strikeouts, both coming in the seventh inning, and three walks, while allowing five hits in the win. Brittney Slightom would throw out two runners trying to steal in the game as well.

In the second game of the home-and-home series, the two teams would eclipse the run total from the day before by the end of the first inning.

Edinburg would get things rolling with a run in the first on two hits and a walk, but Lincolnwood answered back with three runs of their own in the first.

Sidney Glick doubled to start the inning and Brittney Slightom followed with a bunt single and a stolen base to put runners on second and third. Cassie Krager would ground out to short, but put the ball in play and allowed Glick to tie the game at 1-1.

Sadie Slightom would give Lincolnwood the lead with an RBI single and Maggie McClelland continued the rally with a single that put runners on first and second.

Savannah Bowman would hit into a fielder's choice for the second out of the inning, but Desi Pitchford singled home Slightom to make it 3-1 before Edinburg got out of the inning.

The Wildcats would chip away at the lead though, taking advantage of three straight errors to score one run in the second, then putting together three straight hits for two more runs in the third to make it 4-3 in their favor.

Edinburg threatened to blow the game open with a leadoff single and a hard hit ball to right field that forced an error, but a base running error would erase the lead runner and Herman, who was starting pitcher once again, got out of the inning with no further damage.

It looked as if Lincolnwood might go away quietly in the fourth after Edinburg got the first two outs, with a walk by Marisa Webb sandwiched in between, but the Lady Lancers had other plans.

Four straight singles by Glick, Brittney Slightom, Cassie Krager and Sadie Slightom made it 6-4 with runners on second and third after Sadie Slightom took second on the throw to home plate.

Both Krager and Sadie Slightom would score on a double by McClelland, who would score on a double by Bowman to make it 9-4.

Back-to-back errors would lead to two more runs as Lincolnwood sent 12 batters to the plate and led 11-4 after four innings.

Herman gave up a leadoff single in the top of the fifth, but got the next three batters quickly to send Lincolnwood back up to the plate.

The Lady Lancers picked up where they left off, scoring three more runs on doubles by Glick and Sadie Slightom and hard hit balls by Brittney Slightom, Krager and McClelland that resulted in errors.

Lincolnwood would round out 14 hits on the day, with Sidney Glick going 3-for-3 with two doubles, a single and a walk. Sadie Slightom was also 3-for-4 with a double, while Brittney Slightom and Maggie McClelland were 2-for-4 with two runs scored apiece.

Eight of the nine Lincolnwood batters got hits and scored in the game, with Cassie Krager, Desi Pitchford, Savannah Bowman and Marisa Webb all contributing base knocks.

Herman would allow just one earned run in her five innings of work, striking out four and walking one while allowing nine hits.

The Lady Lancers will close out the week with a home game against Pana on Thursday, April 4, a make-up from March 25, and a road contest in Carlinville on Saturday, April 6, against the Cavies.
