Lady Lancers Third At New Berlin Tourney

Posted

Just five days after Carlinville handed them their second loss of the season, the Lincolnwood High School volleyball team got back at the Cavies. The Lancers capped off a successful run at the Ray Long Volleyball Classic with a 25-23, 25-14 victory over Carlinville in the third place game in New Berlin on Saturday, Sept. 21.

The win was the fourth of the tournament for Lincolnwood, who used a solid defensive effort throughout the weekend to earn a successful finish. Their final game was no different as four Lancers had eight digs or more, with Maggie McClelland posting a game-high 14 points. McClelland, who also shared the team lead in points and aces, was named to the all-tournament team for her performance at New Berlin.

Lexie Millburg would also have 12 digs, while Cassie Krager and Avery Pope had nine and eight digs respectively.

Kyra Shull would match McClelland with six points for the team lead, while Katelyn Payne led the team in kills with 11. Cassie Krager also had eight kills, while Avery Pope led Lincolnwood with 14 assists.

Lincolnwood’s only loss of the tournament came against the hosts in the gold bracket semifinal on Saturday. The contest would be far from a blowout for the Pretzels as Lincolnwood kept it close, before falling 25-20, 25-19.

The Lancers turned in a solid defensive effort, with Lexie Millburg posting a team-best 19 digs and Cassie Krager adding 16 digs. Sidney Glick also reached double digit dig numbers with ten and had the team’s only block.

On the attack, Katelyn Payne, Madison Krager and Cassie Krager all had five kills apiece, while Avery Pope (seven), Cassie Krager (five) and Sidney Glick (four) shared the setting duties. Glick and Millburg led the way in serving with four points apiece.

Pool Play

The Lancers made it to the gold bracket by finishing 3-0 in pool play on Friday, Sept. 20. The closest of their three wins came in their tournament opener against North Mac. After beating the Panthers 25-21 in game one, Lincolnwood held on in game two for a 25-23 victory.

Defensively, the Lancers were spot on with four players posting at least ten digs against the North Mac hitters. Cassie Krager led the team with 13, while Maggie McClelland and Sidney Glick had 12 apiece and Emme Weller finished with ten. Cassie Krager would also lead the team in kills with ten, while McClelland finished with six. Weller paced Lincolnwood in assists, with 13.

Lexie Millburg would be one of three players to have a team-high three points in the North Mac game, but that was nothing compared to what Millburg would do in Lincolnwood’s 25-12, 25-11 victory over North Greene in game two. The Lincolnwood junior would post an eye-popping 20 service points in the win, four of which came off of aces. Katelyn Payne and Maggie McClelland would lead the team in kills with nine each, while Cassie Krager had seven of Lincolnwood’s 19 assists. Defensively, Payne had two blocks, while Millburg and Cassie Krager led the way with nine digs each.

The Lancers would close out pool play with another overall solid effort in a 25-15, 25-11 win over Valmeyer. Cassie Krager led the attack with ten kills, while also assisting on seven of her teammate’s hits. Katelyn Payne added seven kills, with Avery Pope leading the team with ten assists. Defensively, Krager had two blocks, while Lexie Millburg led the team in digs with ten, one more than the nine put up by Pope. The Lincolnwood freshman also contributed on the service line, serving up three aces and six points, which tied Pope for the team lead with Sidney Glick.

Before the tournament, the Lancers earned a key MSM Conference victory over the South County Vipers, who they had previously defeated at the Montgomery County Invitational in three days just a few days earlier. After a 26-24 thriller in game one, Lincolnwood held on for a 25-22 victory in game two to move their conference mark to 3-0 on the season.

Senior Kyra Shull had a stellar serving game against the Vipers, leading Lincolnwood with nine points and two aces. Cassie Krager paced the Lancers in kills with nine, while Emme Weller had 15 assists. Defensively, both Sidney Glick and Maggie McClelland had nine digs, with McClelland and Cassie Krager also contributing a block apiece.

Lincolnwood will be at home to start the week as they take on Gillespie at the Woodshed on Monday, Sept. 23.
