Lady Lancers Win Home Invite

The Lincolnwood High School softball team ended their weekend on a high note by earning the championship trophy of the Lincolnwood Invitational on Saturday, April 20.

The three-team round robin tournament would be evenly matched as Pana defeated Lincolnwood 5-2 in the first game, Vandalia beat Pana in the second game and Lincolnwood defeated Vandalia in the third game 10-4 to win the tournament on a tie breaker, most runs scored.

Pana would score the first two runs of the opening game, getting a solo tally in both of the first two innings, but didn't blow the game open until the fourth, when they scored three more times.

Lincolnwood tried to come back from the 5-0 deficit, starting with a solo run in the fourth that came after a single by Maggie McClelland and a RBI double by Savannah Bowman.

The Lady Lancers would get one more run in the top of the seventh on a solo home run by Sidney Glick, but Pana pitcher Danielle Bieber would strike out the final batter of the game to secure the win.

McClelland would lead the Lancers at the plate with a 2-for-3 day, while Glick was 1-for-3 with a walk and the homer.

Sydney Herman would take the loss on the mound, giving up five runs (four earned) on 12 hits and a walk, while striking out five.

In their second game, Vandalia scored twice to open the contest, but Lincolnwood came back to take the lead in the first by a 3-2 margin. Sidney Glick doubled to start the rally and scored after a sacrifice bunt by Brittney Slightom and a single by Cassie Krager. Sadie Slightom would reach on an error and both she and Krager would go on to score, with Maggie McClelland driving in a run.

In the second inning Lincolnwood added to their lead as Katelyn Payne singled and scored to make it 4-1. Another run would come in the fourth inning after Sadie Slightom singled and scored following a single by McClelland and Marisa Webb reaching on an error.

A one-out walk to Brittney Slightom and a double by Krager that drove her home would continue the trend in the fifth and make it 6-2 in Lincolnwood's favor.

Vandalia would get a run in the fifth on a solo home run by Morgan Liddy and another run in the seventh, but Lincolnwood had built up a 10-3 lead by that point.

The Lancers picked up a run on two errors in the sixth and plated two more unearned runs, plus one earned one, when Maggie McClelland, Marisa Webb and Desi Pitchford scored after an error, a double and another error.

Krager and McClelland would both have two hits apiece for the Lancers, who outhit the Vandals 8-7 in the game and capitalized on ten Vandalia errors.

Sadie Slightom would get the victory on the mound, giving up four runs (two earned) on seven hits and two walks, with one strikeout on the day.

The positive finish to the tournament came after a tough loss to 16-1 Tri-City on Thursday. The Lady Tornadoes scored two runs in the first and five runs in each of the next two innings to take a 12-0 victory over the Lancers.

Brittney Slightom had the only base hit of the game for Lincolnwood, a single in the fourth inning.

Lincolnwood will start the week with a pair of home games as they take on Lanphier on Monday, April 22, followed by a conference tilt with Morrisonville on Tuesday, April 23.
