The Litchfield Lady Panthers soccer season came to an end last Wednesday evening, May 15, as they fell to Decatur St. Teresa 5-2 in the first round of the Class 1A Litchfield Sectional.
The Lady Panthers were caught off guard by St. Teresa’s speed early and were faced with a 3-0 deficit at halftime. The second half would be a different game all together as the Panthers scored in the first four minutes.
Jordan Morgan would deliver a corner into the box and Devan Morgan would get on the end of it, but was denied by a pack of St. Teresa Bulldogs. The ball found its way over to Maddie Diamond, who snuck it through the scrum to the back of the net.
All of a sudden what looked like a rout in the making in the first half, became a hard-fought contest. Litchfield cranked up the pressure and got the game within one just eight minutes later.
Izzy Ray had some space down the right side and found Greta Fleming at the top of the area. With her back to the goal and holding off two defenders, Fleming found Maddie Diamond, who would blister a shot inside the far post to make the score 3-2.
The teams would trade chances until St. Teresa would put the game away for good with two more goals. The Lady Panthers played a tough game, getting contributions all over the pitch and had nothing to hang their heads about after losing 5-2 to this year's sectional champs Decatur St. Teresa, who would go on to beat Carlinville 1-0 on Saturday, May 18, in the championship.
