The Litchfield softball team came into Monday's game in need of a win, but to get one, they would have to go through neighboring Lincolnwood. In a close game played on the Panthers' home field due to field conditions in Raymond, Litchfield pulled out a 4-2 victory in a highly competitive affair.
Emily Senjan set the tone for the Panthers early as she walked and eventually scored after Lizzy Luttrell reached on an error and Carly Boden sent a run-scoring ground out to second base.
Senjan would strike again in the second inning, this time with a three-run home run that put her team out in front 4-0. After Lincolnwood starting pitcher Sadie Slightom got the first out, Bri Jeffers reached on an error by the Lancer third baseman.
Slightom would get out number two on a strikeout, but Ashley Hickerson singled and Senjan homered to give her team a sizeable early lead. Litchfield would threaten to score more after the dinger, getting a walk by Mallory Beechler and a single by Luttrell, but Slightom would get out of the inning without further damage.
Senjan was also solid on the mound for the Lady Panthers, striking out six batters in the first four innings, while allowing just three hits.
Lincolnwood finally got on the board in the fifth inning though, with Sidney Glick drawing a one-out walk to start the rally. Britney Slightom would move Glick up on the base paths and Cassie Krager would connect with a pitch that allowed Glick to score.
Slightom would be thrown out at the plate, but Krager would replace her on the base paths for the fielder's choice. A single by Sadie Slightom would plate Krager and with two innings to play, it was a 4-2 ball game.
Sadie Slightom would keep the Panthers from adding to their total as she allowed just one hit in the final two frames, but Senjan was just as tough. Lincolnwood would get a runner to third after an error allowed Kyra Shull to reach base and a single by Sydney Herman moved her to third base in the sixth inning, but Senjan struck out the final batter to end the threat.
Krager would get a one-out base hit in the bottom of the seventh, but Litchfield held on with a fly out to center and a ground ball to second to end the game.
Senjan would strike out nine and walk one to earn the win, while Sadie Slightom was the hard luck loser with four unearned runs, six strikeouts and three walks. Both pitchers also helped their own causes, with Senjan reaching three times and scoring two runs with a homer and two walks, while Slightom was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Ashley Hickerson also had two hits for Litchfield, while Lizzy Luttrell reached base in three of her four at-bats with two singles and an error. Brittney Slightom joined her sister in going 2-for-4 for the Lancers, while Sidney Glick reached base twice and scored once.
With the win, Litchfield improved to 2-8 on the season, while Lincolnwood moved to 3-6.
