After nearly knocking off one of the conference front runners in their previous game, the Litchfield High School softball team broke through for their first South Central Conference win on Monday, April 29, with a 9-4 victory over Roxana.
The Panthers would use a late charge to pick up the victory, scoring five runs in the sixth inning to break a 4-4 tie, but were in the game throughout.
After two scoreless innings by both teams, Roxana would score two runs on an error and two hits to take the first lead of the contest. Litchfield had an answer though, getting back-to-back singles from Kate Komor and Emily Senjan to start the bottom of the third.
Mallory Beechler would clear the bases with a double and Carly Boden would drive in Beechler two batters later, with a single to right field.
The 3-2 Litchfield lead would hold until the fifth, when the Shells scored two more runs to retake the lead. The Panthers would tie the game in the bottom half of the inning, as Trisha Seipp walked and scored after an RBI double by Bri Jeffers.
Litchfield starter Emily Senjan kept it a tie game with a scoreless sixth inning, then helped spark the knockout punch by picking up her fourth hit of the game. Senjan's single came after a single by Komor, as Litchfield put two runners on to start the inning, just as they had in the third.
Beechler would reach base on an error, allowing Komor to score, and Lizzy Luttrell would double to score Senjan and Beechler. Another double, this time by Seipp, a single by Ashley Hickerson and a single by Jeffers would give Litchfield two more runs and the Panthers a 9-4 lead going into the seventh.
Senjan would give up a two-out walk in the final frame, but struck out the last batter to secure the win.
The strikeout would be the junior hurler's eighth of the game as she gave up four runs (two earned) on eight hits and a walk. Senjan also went 4-for-4 with two runs scored to lead the Panthers at the plate.
Kate Komor, Bri Jeffers and Trisha Seipp also had two hits apiece and combined for four runs and an RBI.
Litchfield was to play Staunton on Tuesday, April 30, but wet weather postponed that contest. If Mother Nature relents, the Lady Panthers will be at Vandalia on Thursday, May 2, and at Greenville on Friday, May 3.
