To start their weekend off the Nokomis Lady Redskins traveled to Okaw Valley on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 11.
Relieved that the tough round of games were behind them, they knew they still had to give it their all while facing the Timberwolves of Okaw Valley.
To start off the game, the Timberwolves captured the tip ball and took it aggressively to the basket, resulting in a foul and two free throws. They proved they were there to battle and they weren’t going to make it easy for the Lady Redskins.
As the first quarter went on, the Redskins fed it to the posts multiple times, which resulted in made baskets and free throws. Going into the second quarter the Lady Redskins barely held onto a 6-4 lead.
During the second quarter, the refs were not as generous and the Skins were not sneaky about fouling, ultimately sending the Timberwolves to the line to shoot for free. As half time approached, the game was tied 15 to 15.
Needing to take the lead and extend it, the Skins came out aggressively at half to regain their advantage.
Unfortunately, the Timberwolves had an answer and soon made it a close game once again. It was 24 to 23, the Timberwolves with the lead, going into the final minutes.
There was a slow start to the fourth quarter, with neither team scoring any points.
Eventually, the Lady Redskins took the lead with a few minutes left and held onto it until seconds left in the game.
Unfortunately, with a wide open shot from the free-throw line, the Timberwolves took the lead by one and defeated the Redskins 29-28.
Audrey Sabol had 11 points and 12 rebounds and Addison Dangbar added nine points herself.
Nokomis vs. Marquette
Prior to the close call with Okaw Valley, the Lady Redskins were on the road Thursday night, Jan. 9, to battle the Alton Marquette Explorers.
They knew they were getting ready to face a tough Explorer squad that was aggressive and skilled. As play started it was made obvious early on that it was going to be another difficult game for the Lady Redskins.
Despite getting the ball into the post, the Redskins were having a difficult time on the offensive end. They were outscored by Marquette 17-9 after the first quarter.
Things didn’t seem to look up for the Lady Redskins in the second quarter either. The Explorers took advantage of the missteps on defense and scored 16 more points in the second quarter, making it 33 to 16 heading into the locker room.
During the second half, things didn’t change for the Redskins. Marquette kept the large lead and ran with it. The Redskins were unfortunately defeated by Marquette 61-27. Despite the low score on the Redskins side, they were led by Audrey Sabol with 19 points and eight rebounds.
Next week will be a busy one for Nokomis as they are set to play four games in six days. The first of those games is on Monday, Jan. 13, at South Fork High School in Kincaid, followed by home games against Pawnee and Bunker Hill on Jan. 15 and 16 and a road trip to East Alton-Wood River on Saturday, Jan. 18.
