The Nokomis Lady Redskins had their third consecutive home game of the season on Saturday afternoon, Dec. 14, against South County, a combination of New Berlin, Waverly and Franklin.
Nokomis and South County had shared some similar opponents, so the Skins had an idea of what they were up against. The Lady Redskins were once again outsized during the match-up, but the girls were determined to give it everything they had in order to pull off a win.
Winning the tip ball, the Skins immediately showed they were ready to battle. Hustling to every ball and battling on the boards, the Lady Redskins only trailed South County by two at the end of the first quarter, 6-4.
In the second quarter, the Lady Redskins continued to pick up the intensity resulting in the Skins taking the three-point lead heading into the locker room at half time, 17 to 14.
During the third quarter, both teams scored ten points, still making it a close game in the final quarter. Nokomis was able to maintain a small lead into the final minutes, thanks to free throws and key baskets scored.
However, South County had the ball, down two with seconds left. Coming out of a timeout, Nokomis’ defensive strategy paid off as a last second three-point attempt, rimmed out, resulting in a 33-31 win for the Skins.
The win improved their record to 5-6. The team was led by Macee Eisenbarth with 15 points and eight rebounds. Hailey Engelman added six points herself and Audrey Sabol helped with five points.
The Lady Redskins hosted the Lady Griffins from Father McGivney on Thursday, Dec. 12. From previous years, the Skins knew they would have to bring their A-game in order to have a chance against the Griffins.
The Skins knew that the Father McGivney players were aggressive and most of the Lady Redskins were out-sized by Griffins. Smart and sharp passes were going to have to be made by Nokomis in order to “hang” with the Griffins and get past their aggressive half-court defense.
The Lady Redskins captured the tip ball and it was made obvious early in the first quarter that it was going to be a long night for the Skins. The Griffins took advantage of Nokomis’ lapse in defense as they scored multiple points with breakaway layups. The Lady Redskins trailed the Griffins 10-2 at the end of the first quarter.
Already looking defeated before halftime, the Skins could barely get the ball across half court without turning it over. If they did get the ball on their end, they fired up a quick shot and let the Griffins get the rebound, resulting in more breakaway layups. The Skins trailed 26-6 at half.
Coming back out at the half, the Lady Griffins dropped their aggressive press and the Skins finally scored some points in their half-court set up. Despite the drop of the press, the Lady Griffins dominated during the third quarter, making the score 36-12.
The fourth quarter wasn’t much of a change for the Lady Redskins as they were defeated 49-26. It seemed to be a never ending flow of turnovers for the Lady Redskins as they had the most turnovers they’ve had all season.
Despite the disappointing loss, the team was led by Macee Eisenbarth with 12 points and seven rebounds. Hailey and Natalie Engelman both had two buckets themselves as well.
Weather permitting, Nokomis will take on Auburn at home on Dec. 16, followed by another home game against Pawnee on Dec. 17.
