The 2021 season has had its challenges on and off the court for the Nokomis High School volleyball team, but the Lady Redskins managed to end their season on a high note on Saturday, April 17.
After dropping the first game 25-17 to conference foe East Alton-Wood River on Saturday, the Redskins rallied back to win game two 25-20 and force a game three.
The Oilers would be ahead late in the game, but Nokomis managed to dig deep and comeback, holding East Alton-Wood River at 23 for four straight points as the Redskins escaped with a 25-23 win.
The victory not only demonstrated the potential of the Redskins, but also the perseverance of the team. Seniors Delaney Keiser and Kristen Stauder racked up eye-popping numbers on the back row, with 32 and 27 digs respectively, despite Keiser playing on a sprained ankle.
Skylar Stewart and Audrey Sabol played big closer to the net, putting down 13 and five blocks against the EAWR hitters.
In the serving game, senior Alex Pavolka led the way with seven points, followed by Keiser and Presley Lamb with five each and Stewart with four.
Stauder led the team in kills, with nine, while fellow senior Olivia Taylor added six, matching Stewart for second most on the day. Presley Lamb and senior Mia Fesser handled setting duties with 13 and 12 assists respectively.
The win on Saturday was the culmination of a long week for the Lady Redskins, who played three games in four days to end the year.
Wednesday, April 14 was senior night for the Nokomis Lady Redskins as they paid tribute to the contributions made by class of 2021 members Olivia Taylor, Kristen Stauder, Delaney Keiser, Alex Pavolka and Mia Fesser.
The game was also the final meeting between Nokomis and Morrisonville in volleyball as the Mohawks will co-op with Lincolnwood next year in all sports. That time couldn’t come soon enough for the Redskins, who fell to the talented visitors from Christian County 25-10, 25-19.
While the score didn’t go in their favor, the seniors contributed heavily on the night in their honor. Stauder and Taylor led the team in kills with three each, with Stauder also pacing the team in digs, posting seven to match co-leader Presley Lamb. Keiser, who had six digs, tied Skylar Stewart for the team lead in service points as well, while Fesser matched Lamb for the lead in assists with four.
In addition to the seniors and the aforementioned underclassmen, sophomore Audrey Sabol added in a block for the Redskins, who moved to 4-12 with the loss.
On April 15, the Redskins traveled to Glen Carbon to take on Father McGivney, who they took to three sets earlier in the year. This time the Griffins would be a little better on their home court, winning 25-16, 25-18.
Kristen Stauder led the team in points with six, while also notching six digs and two blocks. Delaney Keiser followed with five points and eight digs, matching Presley Lamb for the team-high.
At the net, Oliva Taylor led the way in kills with three, while Audrey Sabol, Mia Fesser and Stauder had two each. Lamb handled setting duties with five assists, while Fesser chipped in three assists.
Nokomis finishes the season with a record of five win and 13 losses in their abbreviated 18 game schedule.
